Googling will get you quite a bit of some information.

The St James War Memorial Project (which I believe one of our members might be thanked for) has a Roll of Honour http://thewarmemorial.blogspot.co.uk/20 ... k-3rd.html
and also extracts from the book The Elder Dempster Fleet in the War, together with a list of casualties http://thewarmemorial.blogspot.co.uk/p/ss-burutu.html

Wikipedia has some information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Burutu_(1902) and this site will give you the sizes of the ship http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?13768

It would seem that the National Archives would hold some papers, apparently now digitized so they may be available to purchase online.

BT165/1804 has crew agreements filed under Ships' Official Number(ON) of 115280

A gentleman on the envisionzone website appears to have discovered some information about this, forgive me for linking to another forum, thereby practically stealing their research, but I'm not claiming it is mine. http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forum ... pic=169122

Hi Joan,

Sorry I didn't get to post in time to be of help, I've been without my laptop for a few weeks and am only just getting back on track! I hope that you got a chance to look at the SS Burutu page on the St James Memorial blog, I do have a few other bits and pieces to do with the ship, do you mind sharing what your grandfather's name is? I'll see if he's mentioned in any of the other files.

Best wishes
Amanda

The only thing I have for George Kelly is his entry in the Maritime Deaths Index, in case you haven't seen it:

The Burutu was a defensively armed passenger/cargo ship which sank when it collided with another British ship, there was no enemy action involved so only those in the Navy were entitled to commemoration, not the crew and passengers.

I've started looking into the newspaper reports and casualty lists for this sinking and there are a lot of discrepancies, even the Elder-Dempster 'official' list of crew casualties seems to be missing some names which appear on the Marine Deaths register.
