Mary Ann Garrahan, West Derby.

Post by CLOBRYN »

Greetings all,
I am trying to discover the fate of my Maternal G G Grandmother Mary Ann Garrahan (born Mary Ann Ogilvie in Greenock, Renfrewshire abt. 1838).
She married Nicholas Garrahan in 1865 at Newry N. Ireland while he was a soldier in the 29th regiment of foot and they had two sons born there: Nicholas abt 1864 & Gilbert abt 1866.
My G Grandfather, Edward, was born in Chatham, Kent in 1868 as was his sister, Mary Ann, in 1869, while Nicholas was a warder at Gillingham Gaol.

The 1871 Census has Nicholas & Mary Ann, together with their children, Nicholas, Gilbert, Edward & Mary Ann, living in Liverpool in the municipal ward of St. Anne's. (No legible address). Nicholas senior is recorded as being a night-watchman at 10 Costor? street on the day of the census.

The 1881 census records Mary Ann as being head of household (Widowed) at 91 China street, with three new additions to the family; Margaret, b. 1872, Herbert b. 1876, & Hubert b. 1878.

Her final appearance is in the 1891 census, living at 83 Cellar? (barely legible address). She is described as head of household, aged 57, widowed and a Charwoman. Also living with her are two of her sons Herbert & Hubert, (incorrectly named as Albert) and Mary her daughter b.1881.

This is the last record I have for Mary Ann Garrahan, as I have been unable to locate her in the 1901 census or locate any death record.

Quite a few of Mary Ann's children, including my Grandfather, Edward, remained in West Derby, and my mother, Isabella, her two sisters and two brothers were born there.
Perhaps someone on this forum may know what became of Mary Ann; if so, I would appreciate any information you can provide.

Many thanks
Clobryn

Hi Clobryn and welcome to the forum.

I think the address in 1871 was Circus Street.

Could Mary Ann have remarried?
There was a marriage in 1895 to Thomas McCudden at Our Lady & St Nicholas
Sep qtr 1895 8b 185 Liverpool.

Haven't found anything else significant so far
