Private George Roland Wallace

Post by Katie »

The above mentioned soldier is recorded on the CWGC site as being

Rifleman George Roland Wallace, service number 332769 1st/6th King's Liverpool Regiment, date of death 2nd June 1919

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casua ... E%20ROLAND

On SDGW he is recorded as follows:-

Name: George Roland Wallace
Birth Place: Darlington, Durham
Residence: Liverpool
Death Date: 2 Jun 1918
Death Location: France & Flanders
Enlistment Location: Liverpool
Rank: Private
Regiment: King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Battalion: 9th Battalion
Number: 332629
Type of Casualty: Died of wounds
Theatre of War: Western European Theatre

I have checked the CWGC Register and there is no error there.

So which is correct.

Just checked his headstone and the details on this are what is recorded on CWGC

Hi Katie,
Wondering if the gravestone transcription is flawed? Since the war had ended the previous November why wasn't he brought back to the UK as an injured soldier. Instead, he is recorded as dying of wounds in France some 8 months later.

I think the CWGC site may have accepted that volunteered transcription without checking records.

Thanks DS.

His regiment number is the 9th KLR (Ken Lees will be able to confirm this) and I will have to check the newspapers to confirm his correct date of death and go from there.

The GRO War Death Army Other Ranks lists

Wallace George R Private 332629 Regt Liverpool as a death in 1919

There were many soldiers still in France in 1919 and sadly some would have been wounded by unexploded shells etc.

As his parents are listed on the CWGC site they must have been happy with the date given as they would have been sent the forms from the CWGC to fill in and state what they would like to be put on his gravestone and that becomes the additional information on the CWGC website. If the forms weren't returned that part remains blank. Forms were sent to the next of kin given on the their service papers.
