Lamb Hotel Wavertree

Post by Wooltonian »

Looking for info on the Lamb Hotel, think it was on Wavertree Road near the former Abbey Cinema. Remember going there with my father circa 1950 when it was nanaged by Mrs Fitzsimmons and her son Matt who had played for Liverpool FC before WWII. Never worked out the relationship between Fitzsimmons and our Keeley family and soon after my visit my work took me away from Liverpool. Now nearing 80 I am trying to tidy up the loose ends of the family. Any help gratefully received.

If you're interested in the actual building, one end of it collapsed in 2007 and there were fears it would be demolished, then this happened:

Hi Wooltonian, I'm sure you must have great memories of Wavertree and Woolton too.
A warm welcome to our forum.
Eddie and I enjoyed many a Saturday night in the Lamb in the late 60's as we had our first home, a flat just around the corner in Church Rd.

What a wealth of knowledge here. Thanks to all who have replied. Interestingly it would seem that there is not a family connection BUT maybe the name Doggett is a connection. Jack Doggett was my god-father when I was baptised at St Mary's Woolton way back in 1933. I have a [very] hazy recollection of him as a child. He was very "sweet" on my aunt Mary Keeley who never married and, I believe, moved to the south east.
Anyway, thanks to all who replied.

This is outside the time frame for the orginal query but added in case it is of interest:
The City of Liverpool Licensing Report Book for 1909 shows The Lamb at 111 High Street, Wavertree, owned by Peter Walker & Son Ltd and managed by William Wood. It had one room on first floor licensed for Music and Singing [note the difference!] and a billiard room (one table) on first floor. There were 14 rooms for domestic purposes and 2835 square feet of drinking space.

Thanks Daggers; we usually "talk" RFA matters but its nice to hear from you. Think I only went in The Lamb once or twice - beer OK but the "brown" decor didn't grab me.

To anybody interested [?] I am slowly recovering from a broken arm, not the result of taking insufficient water with it but the collapse of a country path while walking my dog. After being "plastered" at the hospital I was talking to one of the doctors who revealed a connection with Liverpool and asked if I could suggest sources to help him do some research. He has not been on duty at the same time as me so we have not talked further. It shows how just talking to people can open up all sorts of interests. The doctor is a very cultured Indian gentleman and I am looking forward to our conversation.
Maybe he will become active on the Forum!

It's often a small world, spread the word, we'd love to speak with him and perhaps we can offer him some help.

Glad to hear you are on the mend, and the broken arm doesn't cause you any problems with using the keyboard :D
