Con 177 K George Alexander ARCHIBALD

Post by Mark Abbott »

One of my current research projects is the above named who served with Liverpool City Police, being awarded the bronze Good Service medal on 13 April 1942.

I have him born 18/1/1898, the son of George A and Betsy Archibold of 13 Downe Street.

I have his baptism, 191* census but not the 190*.

Any help welcome

This is the baptism for George A's younger sister Alice, again at St Nicholas, in 1899, so a little nearer the 1901 census, can anybody read the street name better than me and perhaps find it in the census?

Thanks Bert.

The National Archives that usually have the Census Street Indexes I don't think have one for 1901, can anybody who has access to an address search give us the reference please?

They're not at 12 Wulstan Street in 1901. A family called Brook are living there.

Well from the number of years given in 1911 as 16, I believe the marriage would be George Archibald and Bessie Entwistle in Q3 1894 Liverpool 8b 210 which took place in St Nicholas, and unfortunately doesn't appear to be on Ancestry or Online Parish Clerk to get the details.

Not in Wulstan St in 1894. No George Archibald list either.
90 Edinburgh Rd in 1911.
There is a record in Anx for John 17 joining the T.A same address, in 1912
He was an apprentice with Dunlop.
And a marriage for Joseph Henry Archibald 22 soldier bachelor father George marine engineer at St Judes 1918.
J.H address is 14 Fairclough Lane.

Thank you all for your help.

The family's whereabouts in 1901 is a puzzle.

Tina, where did you find the info on John? I think he also became a policeman.

It is a puzzle indeed Mark. In case there was a 'serious' mis-transcription I have searched with just forenames for the parents as well as the children, singly and paired up, with/without birth years, and not found any of them..... anywhere.

Maybe he was living here...
The village of Deal in Kent is missing in its entirety from the 1901 census.

It worked thank you.

I suspect he didn't manage to join the police!

George A Archibald is with parents George and Betsey in the 1901 census, but you have to search for Entwistle not Archibald - there is an error in the transcription and he is listed as son of Alice Entwistle, who is head of household and Betsey's mother, living in Arundel Street, Walton.

Have you gone any further back than George's parents? My interest is George Alexander's brother, Joseph Henry.

Hi Gill, thanks for the pointer.
For the crew this is the family in 1901. The error appears not to be in the transcription but by the enumerator when he/she copied the Household details into the Summary Sheet. George's surname Archbold has been lined through and 'do' inserted under Alice's son's 'do' which is under Alice's surname. This resulted in all the Archbold folk being transcribed as Entwhistle! And it can't be corrected because that is what the Summary Sheet shows.
