Thomas Smale 1901 father Samuel, could he be my Thomas Smith

Post by dawnelyndadawe »

Help please.
I ask for help a few months ago regarding my grandfather Thomas Smith from Liverpool, 1900-1901 1st April was sent as a Home Child to Canada.
We the family know nothing about his family from Liverpool

Well there is no birth certificate for he GRO have done a search each side of the date, using the father name Samuel Smith.

So trawling through 1911 census to see what Thomas´s were in institutions, along with a sister Catherine who was younger than him, i came upon

Thomas Smale 1901 2 days old on census,
Father Samuel Smale 1874 (correct year is 1869)a member on Ancestry has this year for him
Mother Margaret Smale 1877 (nee Ward they married in 1894 in St Simons)
There is another son Richard David (1896)

Moving on, 1911 which is where i picked up.
All three children are in different homes/orphanages
Richard David Smale1899 is in the workhouse
Thomas Smale 1901 is in the Everton Road Industrial Shcool
Catherine Small (not Smale) is up with the nuns at Nazareth House at Great Crosby, in the Home for children and aged poor
It really all ties up, maybe my grandfather didn´t want to me called Smelly Smale, and he changed it to Smith.
I am looking for a Samuel father,
Catherine sister younger than him and they got split up.
Mother Margaret Smale died 1907 West Derby.
And Thomas Smales was born around April fool day.

Apparently Richard David died in 1913 ish in infirmary workhouse
Looks like dad joined the army as i cannot find him, either Cheshire regiment or Lancs regiment.

Where do i find the Everton Road Industrial School Records please and also
records from The sister of Nazareth House
Help please where are these records kept, it looks like it is a good shot for me
Any help or advise from you liverpool genealogist would be great
Thanks

Hi Dawne,

Nazareth house is still there, you could contact them and ask about the archives.

The majority of records for Liverpool, including those for industrial schools, if they still exist, would be held at the Liverpool Record Office.

Hiya Bertie,
My heart sank yet again today, as i found the death also of Thomas Smale not too far away in Prescot.
Every time i feel i making headway, i get disappointed and down hearted
When will i ever solve this family.

So Thomas Smale 31st March 1901 died in 1974 not far from Liverpool.
Anyhow another avenue shut.

Thanks again for all of your help back to the drawing board

Hiya Tina,

We have put Thomas Smale to bed, as he died in 1974 in prescot dob 31.3.1901. Bertie found him first dying in Prescot, not far from Liverpool in 1974
My grandfather always said he was Thomas Smith, 01.04.1900 from Liverpool his father was Samuel. I have been on this now for 5 years, i cannot find him.
It was just i was looking for Thomas on 1911 census in institutions and Thomas Smale turned up and his birth date was within a day and year of my grandfather, and his father was Samuel and he had a little sister Catherine.
So yesterday i was really excited, today, i am on the floor, another dead end.
But thanks for your help and interest
