Ok now I am lost

Heavy two days so not caught up to you!!

Norah Davies and Sydney Usher.........because of looking for GG mum not delved into this one. They married late in life, he died soon after and there were no children.

So Norah Prendergast fitted in here?

Hi Sue

just to rewind a bit... remember John Prendergast and Honora Joyce had a few children including Honora Prendergast 1878, and 2 mmonth old Ann in 1881 who may be the same person:wink:
last sighting of the family here with daughter Ann who we think may be Nora...
Dad John's age alters on each census...

John Prendergast 59 labourer, b Ireland
John Prendergast 21b Irelannd
Mary Prendergast 14
Ann Prendergast 12
Thomas Prendergast 9

Alison found deaths for children they had apart from Mary and Ann

Found Mary, (and dad John Prendergast), in 1901 married to William Surtees Usher who became a Master Mariner
1901 census

William L Usher 26 b St Helens, mariner

John Prendergast 50 boarder, labourer, Liverpool

William and Mary/May married in 1899

May Josephine Prendergast

Their son is Sydney Usher..

Jenaie Usher 10
John Usher 8

Sydney Usher 3

Sydney married Nora Davies, daughter of Nora Prendergast & JWD in 1948..... he names his dad as William John Usher, Master Mariner... from what I can remeber we couldn't find him but did find William Surtees Usher and thought it was wrong one, but maybe Sydney has given wrong middle name at marriage...

John Prendergast being grandfather to Sydney Usher is the link I think we have been looking for...
To me it looks like Ann Prendergast, Mary's sister, is Nora/Honora and Sydney Usher has married his cousin Norah Davies.

Hi Simone

That is brilliant........cant be a coincidence that the two families are linked :)

So if John Prendergast is a widow in 1901 and living in South Shields.........Honora/Ann is still in liverpool

Found this

RG13/3442

Annie Norah Davies
23
Servant
19 Linnet lane

Could she have been married and a servant

It would put her dob back to Honora 1879.........not Annie dob 1881

I have tried to find the death I (think) I saw for Honora but sods law cant find anything....good possibility I was wrong. With all the dates of birth going askew in the family..........could Honora and Annie be the same person .......sorry clutching at straws now !!

I deffo think ann is your nora/honora. The age is right. As Alison said 2 months of age could be a mistake by the enumerator, 2 years would fit right.

John and honora prendergast are grandparents to sydney usher. He marries norah davies, can't just be a coincidence that he happens to have prendergast grandparents, and those grandparents happen to have a daughter honora/ ann right age to be nora. I wonder if they waited to marry until in thir forties because some of the family would have been gone by then. Marrying a first cousin would have been frowned on by some I reckon.

Good find re annie/norah , yes she is truly on her own now especially if JWD was prone to disappearing. Mary looks to be the only sibling who survived and she is away with dad but Sydney obviously got to know Norah at some point.

That's how I see it all anyway.

Hello,

Just did a google on William Surtees Usher to see if he changed his name at some point to William John Usher and I came across this query from a descendant of May Josephine Usher:

http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/archiv ... -5438.html

It says that May was always known as Mary :D . It also confirms that Sidney Usher had a half-brother Joseph Francis Scott....could this be the J. F Scott who was witness at Sidney and Norah's wedding?

Hi Simone

Youve got the patience of a Saint :D

So each sister had something to hide........Jessie morphed in to her grandmothers daughter........Norah married her cousin.......Nan well, she lied about her mothers name and her age on marriage.

Why they all went to live with their grandmother.....may never know.....but at least I now know who Norah Prendergast was now :D

And you never know I may someday find out if she did or did not marry John William Davies..........and then finally find out where she's buried.

Thanks once again........with out all of you I would still be on that 1st page of that baby book

Re: NORAH PRENDERGAST ***UPDATE***

Post by Sue H »

Morning Folks

Update on the never ending saga of the Prendergast/Davies

Mary Prendergast/William Surtees Usher these details were found by NE Ancestors Forum for me!!

William S Usher, 25, mariner, son of George Robert Usher, engineer, who married Mary J Prendergast, 22 sp, daughter of John Prendergast, labourer........... at Harton Colliery All Saints Church on 13 August 1899. No address given. Maybe John Prendergast move there to find work. Typical tho no trace of Honora/Nora/Annie!!

Sydney Usher, son of William S and Mary J Usher, baptised at Harton All Saints on 4 December 1907. The parents lived in Talbot Road and the father was a mariner. The other children werent found as the records are not complete yet

Mary Josephine Prendergast/Usher came back to Bootle to live and remarried a John Scott in 1913.

Mary Usher
Spouse Surname: Scott
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1913
Registration district: West Derby
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume Number: 8b
Page Number: 840 (click

They had a son called John Francis Scott (he was a witness at Norah and Sydney's wedding along with my nan and grandad) The details found by Alison C

Mary and William had a son John William Surtees Usher born 1902 he was also a Master Mariner. He got his cert in 1925. The address on this certificate is Primrose Road Bootle. He is buried in Ford Cemetery Liverpool in 1933. His address at death was Primrose Road Bootle, Liverpool. So it looks like Mary returned to Liverpool with her children and remarried in 1913 after the death of William sometime sooner.

So the family were living in Primrose Road at least till 1933 (on son's death)maybe longer.

Will try and find death and place of rest for Mary now :D

So it looks like my Norah still had family in Liverpool.

Still awaiting certificates.........tried even for a birth certificate for Norah asking for parents John and Honora (Joyce) so fingers crossed

Well Folks, its finally arrived birth certificate for the illusive Nora/ Annie/Honora P(r)endergast.

I am going to admit I cried.

She was born on 2 October 1878, in 57 Adlington Street. She was called Annie.......her father was John Pendergast, he was a labourer, this was spelt as labrurer ..........so maybe this explains the many different versions of surnames .........the officials couldnt spell either !!

Her mother was Annie Pendergast formerly Joyce, she too lived at Adlington Street.

Now that I have got this I can look for her death...........did she die as Prendergast or Davies........or did she marry/remarry.........job will now be easier with a proper date of birth

I have also received Sydney Ushers death certificate, his sister Wilhemina signed the death certificate................so the families are definately connected.

Just to be sure I am still awaiting Mary P(r)endergast death certificate, because I cant find her dob or baptism certificate. I will then get her birth certificate to prove they were sisters!

So many many thanks to you all.........specially Simone :D

Ok will send for the Norah Davies death certificate. If this is right why oh why were we never told about her :(

Just found the baptism .............the added bit about
Joannis Scott.............could that be the husband she married in 1913 John Scott when she became a widow from William Usher. That would mean she married in Holy Cross ???? Her first marriage was in South Shields I have the details of that.

The person who altered it RxCairns, was somebody who answered me when I was on Ancestry looking for Mary !!

Hugs all round next meeting xx
