WW1 death certificate

My great grandfather was in the Merchant Navy during WW1. His ship was sunk off Malta and he drowned. What would be his place of death on his death certificate?

Post his name, age and, if you know it, the name of his ship when he died here on the forum and we'll have a look-see. His death may not have resulted in the usual form of Death Certificate. For a GRO death certificate back then there usually had to be a body, otherwise he would have been posted as 'missing, presumed drowned' in either the Maritime deaths index 1794-1964 or British nationals armed forces deaths index 1796-2005.

If we know the ship, we can probably find out where the vessel was when she was torpedoed.
