John Edwards 7 alderville Road Walton born 1926 Liverpool
John Edwards 7 alderville Road Walton born 1926 Liverpool
Hi All
i wonder if anybody can help me out with a queary.
I am trying to trace either John Edwards or the family of John Edwards. I no that John was living at 7 Alderville Road Walton in Liverpool when he married his first wife in April 1948.
Shortly before or after the marriage John and his wife kathleen had a daughter Eileen born early 1948. Kathleen then returned to her home town of Coventry with there daughter Eileen.
Eileen was raised by her mother and step father in Coventry, and made contact with John Edwards around 1967 when she got married. I belive that in 1967 John Edwards was living in the Nelson area of Lancashire and had remaried and possibly had more children. Over the years Eileen again lost contact with John.
Eileen is now nearing 65 years of age and her mother has recently passed away and she would like to make contact with either John Edwards if he is still alive or possibly her half siblings or cousins if as she seems to recall there are some.
I belive that John Edwards was born in Liverpool around 1926 his mother was Mary Ellen and his father was called Thomas Edwards. His father is listed as a parcel postman deceased on Johns 1948 marriage certificate.
I have carried out an electroll roll search for 7 Alderville Road walton and have found that from 1940 onwards Mary Ellen Edwards lived at this adress with Augustus Farrell and Margaret Farrell nee Furlong. I no that Margaret and Augustus married in December 1934 in Liverpool, and they continued to live at 7 Alderville Road until there deaths Augustus in 1996 and Margaret in 1999.
Mary Ellen Edwards remained at alderville Road until her death in 1954 aged 61 years.
Augustus and Margaret are also listed as witness on John Edwards 1948 marriage certificate.
I also found out that Augustus and Margaret had 2 children Thomas born 1936 I belive he died in 1988. There daughter is **** born 1944 who I belive is still alive and possibly married.
Any help much appreciated.

As a genealogy forum we are more interested in tracing ancestors than living people, however, we have collected a few links to assist your quest which you will find here http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =14&t=8154

Re:
For his DoB you would need to get his birth cert and because there were several births of that name you would need the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certi ... efault.asp to search one year either side of 1926 [if that is the year calculated from his age at marriage], because you have his parents' names, although not his mother's maiden name. 'Reference Checking' as such was withdrawn by the GRO 5 years ago but there is a way it can be done.
When you go to the GRO site and get to the 'Certificate choice' page, after ticking the Birth Cert box there's a question at the bottom asking if the GRO reference is known. Tick the 'No' box and just enter the year 1926. Don't enter anything else here.
The 'Delivery address details' page comes next, and after that a new page will open allowing you to enter the names of the parents including the mother's maiden name if known. The GRO will search 1 year either side of the given year. If they don't find the cert with the exact details you specified they will refund the full fee of £9.25.
To progress in your search I think it would be an asset to have John Edwards' actual date of birth. It would help in checking online deaths up to 2005, particularly after the 1970s when a date of birth was required when registering a death, and also for searching recent Electoral Rolls online.I believe that John Edwards was born in Liverpool around 1926 his mother was Mary Ellen and his father was called Thomas Edwards.

You are correct in that assumption but you need to check beyond 2005.Mozrob48 wrote:Hi all

The online death index stops at 2005. For 2006 to 2012 you have to check the Index held at a few locations. Complete sets of GRO Indexes is available at Greater Manchester County Record Office, Birmingham Central Library, Bridgend Reference and Information Library, Plymouth Central Library and the City of Westminster Archives Centre. These indexes can also be viewed at the National Archives at Kew.
Hopefully, when the Liverpool Record Office re-opens in all it's beautiful new glory they will have managed to add themselves to the above list.
And don't forget the current online ERs, from 2000 to 2012. PM sent re these.

If you wish to check more recent obituaries, you can search them in the Liverpool Echo online at http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpoo ... y-notices/ They seem to go back to about 2007.

If you have that 1948 marriage cert does John's father Thomas have an initial given for a second forename?

This chap came to our Help Desk on Tuesday were he was given assistance by our Volunteers. I also advised him that as John Edwards settled in Nelson he may be able to get some information from the Lancashire Record Office. Also Mozrob48 am I correct in saying that John Edwards born c1926 had Brothers and Sisters? do you know what their names were?

Hi Dickie Sam and Katie
I am not aware of any brothers and sisters of John Edwards. The lady I believed was his sister was called Margaret Furlong.
I do not have an initial for Thomas just that he was deceased at the time of Johns marriage in 1948. Having checked through the Liverpool street directories I have checked back as far as 1940 and the head of houshold was Mary Ellen Edwards no mention of Thomas.
Katie I am planning a trip to Nelson to see what I can find out there. Thanks for your guidenance the other day much appreciated.
Thanks for all help and advice.
kind Regards

I think the Record Office in Preston may have more records. If you wish to check out Nelson, I would give them a call before you go to see if they have a Family History Department and if so what records they hold.Mozrob48 wrote: Katie I am planning a trip to Nelson to see what I can find out there.

Re: John Edwards 7 alderville Road Walton born 1926 Liverpoo
Hi All
I went to Nelson to find further information on John Edwards. I have now found a possible adress for him in the Nelson area.
Having checked through the electroll roll for Nelson I have found a possible son.
However when I have ancestry searched the son and found his mothers name it appears that John may have been married twice at the same time.
My next question is where do I get marriage certificates for Nelson area from?
I enuired in the library in Nelson but the lady I spoke to was unsure where to go.
Any help much appreciated.
Kind Regards
Martin

Re: John Edwards 7 alderville Road Walton born 1926 Liverpoo
There are a couple of reasons why it may appear that the son was entered twice in the indexes, one being that perhaps his bride was a widow and so would be listed once under her maiden name and again under her previous married name.
You could check this site http://lancashirebmd.org.uk/ to see if they have yet transcribed the marriage entry and whether it lists the church, which might save you having to to order a certificate. It would appear that the parish registers for Nelson would be held at Preston, although the site I have given will give a link to click the reference and a page to print to send in the post to order. If however the place of marriage is given as "Register Office or Registrar Attended" it may mean that the ceremony may have taken place in an RC or non Conformist Church, or indeed in a Register Office, in which case it might be better to order direct from the GRO.
Using http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl this site if you find the entry you can order the certificate online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ using the reference information given for the marriage.
I don't know how new you are to research so forgive me if I seem to be telling you things that you already know, but you might find it useful to read some of the hints given in this post. http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =25&t=6937
