I have often wondered, and now I know at last, what that red light over the door to a house in a back street in Famagusta in 1954 really meant! And now I think about it, there were several in Valetta in Malta in 1953....

Tina! Most definitely yes! My dad had warned me about dem der 'teasers' and about FFI inspections. And a 24 hour stop-over while the engineers fixed the ship's engines wasn't long enough to either work up the curiosity or pluck up the courage to even knock on a door! And to all the ex-squaddies reading this, yes I did go down the Gut to have a browse [and a drink or three].... An unforgettable experience!

The reality is that Leslie Thomas beat me to it with his book 'The Virgin Soldiers'. Although he served in Malaya and I did the time in the Middle East, many experiences were similar! However, we didn't have a local Juicy Lucy! Had to go to Cyprus on R&R to see her!

Must share this with you D.S one camp I went to in WRAC, everyone of the male cooks was called Scouse.
I'd been there about 2 weeks and complained we never got scouse to eat. This big bloke shouted, Oi Scouse and 4 fellas came out of the kitchens...built like the proverbial brick..... He said this little Judy is moaning she doesn't get enough scouse. One lad took off his apron and said to me "I'll see you behind the NAAFI at 9 o'clock".... and NO I stayed in my room.
