Help in Scotland PLEASE

Post by lynne99 »

Help Please
My 3x Great Grand mother, Charlotte FLETCHER (nee SMITH) died in 1856 at 5, St John's Place Glasgow. The death reg says it is off **** John Street. (Maybe East). I cannot find any road of this name and as I am visiting Glasgow would like to know where it was.
In the 1851 census she lived at 7 Calton Entry and the rest of her family where the 10 years later. Was 5 St John's place a hospital?? or a relative ??
Perhaps some one could look it up in a census (51 or 61) for me.
I have found a StJohn's Place renamed Bell Place, but can't find this either.

Her husband remarried but had no more Children that I can find. He died 1864 22nd October at 9 Calton Entry. I have the registration document, but would like some idea of where he might be buried. His wife was buried in Glasgow Necropolis. The kind very helpful people there can't find a trace of her there either.

Thanks in anticipation Lynne

Hi Lynne,

It appears it could be La Belle Place, will investigate further. Will find it on modern Google maps as well as this 1882 link,, bottom of Claremont St, off Sauchiehall St.

In 1851, 5 St John's Place in the parish of St John, Glasgow, was occupied by Mrs Cruikshanks and family, it doesn't appear to be there in the 1861 census. I don't think it was ever a hospital.

Thanks Bert. I wonder if Mrs Cruikshank could have been a sister , mother etc?? Do you know her first name or her children's names?

On the death cert it looks like St John's Place off East John St. The family all lived aroung Gallowgate and that appears to be fairly close.

Just found East John St on the left of Gallowgate going out of Glasgow, parallel to White Vale St.I can't work out why she should have died there though. The death document says she died of Bronchitis which she had had for 9 months.

Hi Lynne,
That's certainly the correct place, Whitevale St, East John St, East Lyon, East Nelson, Gallowgate St, all come under Enumeration District 22, Parish Number 644/1, as does St John's Place, 1851.

She probably died at kindly friends or relatives home who was looking after her.

Hi Lynne,

This site might help.

http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries ... fault.aspx

I came across this (paysite) which has a lot of Scottish burials, but not a full database. I found two of my ancestor's burials in Chester on the site!

Thought it must be you, because of your wide knowledge. Tried both those sites, Jan. I have sent an email to the Mitchell Library, but the other has not come up trumps yet. Thanks again.
