Liverpool Gaol Great Howard Street

Post by Jim Sangster »

I have explored many sources but so far without success, may I enquire if anyone can direct me to a picture of Liverpool Gaol, Great Howard Street. The Gaol used to be sited near to the junction of Great Howard Street and Leeds Street. The gaol closed in 1855 and the prisoners transferred to the then new prison at Walton.
Thanks in advance Jim

Nor sure if this is the one, or whether it's Kirkdale.

As this is a scan of a print I paid for, can I ask what you propose to do with it?

The above print looks to me, to show Derby Rd/Esk St bridewell. Part of which is still there today:

I checked another print, and yours does look to be the Gt Howard St Gaol. The Esk St prison is a bit further North.

Thank you all once again for your speedy replies. The result is fantastic. My family lived about 200 yards further down Great Howard Street for about 130 years from c1830 to 1960's. I have been trying to appreciate their tough existence. Best Wishes, Jim

Dear Mary, May I appologise to you for not responding to your post of the 5 Nov last but I have not been on this site recently. Please see my reply also dated 5 Nov in which I said "I have been trying to appreciate their tough existance." This was my reply to your original query. I can assure you I had no intention of offending you or any of the very helpful contributors to this magnificent organisation, who have helped me on a number of occasions in the past. Keep up the good work and thanks once again for past assistance. Jim (Member Number 925)

Googling produced

www.ancestryimages.com/proddetail.php?prod=g0970

I think it was a different place to Great Howard Street Gaol as when you google Great Howard Street Gaol you don't get references to Kirkdale and vice versa.

Hi Doedoe,

Kirkdale gaol closed in 1892.

Until recent years the area around Sessions Road was full of history. The playground was previously the hanging ground and nearby was the Sessions public house which I believe was on the site of the old Sessions House. Across the road from there was St John's school where unexpectedly a part of the playground fell in one day revealing a set of underground cells that had been part of the bridewell where the prisoners were kept overnight before heading towards the courts. I'm sure your handcuffs would have many a tale to tell.
