James Whalley - King's Liverpool Regiment

Hi- I registered for the board because I am looking for info on my grandfather James Whalley who was in the Kings Liverpool Regt in WW1. When I found this thread I thought the "J.Whalley 19334" listed as wounded in the list above might be him, I know he was on the Somme and was wounded in the foot at some point. However pursuing this further I found the same J. Whalley's name on a memorial:

where it is stated that he was killed on Sept 4th 1916. If so, this can't be my grandfather (who survived the war and lived until 1977!). So I wondered- is it possible that the name is on the memorial because wounded and killed soldiers were not always differentiated, so that it could be that someone was listed as killed when they were in fact not? Or is it simply that this must be some other J. Whalley from the Kings Liverpool who, sadly, didn't make it?

I'm sure these are very basic questions for folks here but any info, or pointers for further research, would be gratefully received. Many thanks.

Unfortunately the man you mentioned in your post was killed in action on 4/9/16 and was from Aughton

I have checked my records and have a couple of other possibles for you both born about 1895 and both served in the King's Liverpool Regiment during the war. If one of them matches let me know and I will post more complete information. Let me know what you already have as this sometimes helps.

In 1920 lived at Bridge Rd, Maghull

Thank you for posting.

At present I am indexing local casualty list published in the local press. These list were released by the War Office to the Times Newspaper when they were received from the Front. Lance-Corporal James Whalley 19334 was reported as being wounded in a list published 30/9/1916. In a list published 29/11/1916 he was reported as wounded and missing. He was officially declared dead in a list published 27/7/1917.

I have had a look in my database and the only other James Whalley was Lance-Corporal James Whalley
356181-Earlestown and he is listed as being a Prisoner of war in a list published 18/1/1918.

If your James Whalley does not appear in these lists, this does not mean to say he wasn't wounded. I found out recently while researching these lists that the War Office did not release the names of all those Killed/Wounded/Missing or those taken POW, why I don't know, I need to do further research into how casualties were reported to the Public. That will mean a trip down to Kew.

Joe has done extensive research into the King's Regiments and he will be able to help.
