Patrick DUGGAN / DUGON /DOUGAN b.1877

My G.Grandfather is shown on the 1901 census in Coatbridge as Patrick DUGON, a iron tube worker, age 23, born England. His marriage certificate of 14/07/1905 now shows his name as Patrick DUGGAN, 28, Iron Tube Worker. Father: John Duggan (Deceased). Mother: Ann McAvoy (Deceased). In the 1911 Census he is still residing in Coatbridge, and still shows England as his birthplace, however, I am struggling to trace him. The spelling varies which doesn't help. I have managed to find his Father's Death Certificate in 1891, in Coatbridge at the age of 50 which shows him as the "Widower of Ann McAvoy". His employment was also iron tube worker. No parents are listed as he died in a model lodging house. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it, as I have been stuck on this for years.

Do you have any inklng of where he may have been born.... is there reason to suspect Liverpool is connected ?

Unless you can find them with some certainty on a census then you are going to need either a birth entry or baptism to fit the details you have. We are lucky that Liverpool have so many baptism available online, however I did not find one to match.

Using the details that Dickiesam has given above, it might be worth your while contacting the GRO, www.gro.gov.uk and rather than completing their form, give them the name, approximate date and father's name and occupation, they will then do a three year search for you and provide you with the appropriate certificate if they find it. If however, they don't, then they will refund your money.

I assume the Coatbridge you refer to is in Lanarkshire, Scotland? If so, could you please scan the two census entries you have him on, crop to the area showing his origin, and post the images on here. Because the Scotland's People site requires credits to view documents we won't be able to see them otherwise.

With 'Irish' names like Duggan and McAvoy/McEvoy I would have suspected the family came from Ireland, more specifically Northern Ireland. Many Irish families moved to Scotland, indeed there was an annual migration to the lowlands for the potato harvest and many stayed.

Have you found his parents' marriage?

Meant to ask.... who were the witnesses at Patrick Duggan's marriage? And have you found the family in an earlier census before John Duggan's death?

Hi, Sorry I have been away so long, computer crashed with all my Data and I had to try and collate it all again. I don't know how to reply individually so please bear with me:-
Simone - I thought Liverpool would be a good chance if they came across from Ireland as I would have though this would have been the most common point of entry to the UK. I have checked out some of them but it was getting expensive buying Birth Certs but didn't think to keep them, with hindsight that was a bit stupid.
MaryA - Yes, that is one of the problems too many Patrick Duggan's and John Duggan's and cant be sure ones I have found are correct. I didn't thing the GRO would do a general search but I will give them a try.
Dickiesam - Yes, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. I have spend a fortune on Scotland People trying to find them and links to them. Will scan copies of what I have.
The winesses at patrick Marriage in coatbrdige are Edward McVey and Agnes Green. I can't find a marriage cert for his Parents John Duggan / Ann McAvoy.
Bertieone - Yes, that is him on 1901 census at 23yo. I cannot find him before that date. I don't know who the Patrick Duggan 1841 is, he is too old and the father's name is John and seemed to be an Iron Foundry worker like Patrick.
