1914-1918 Memorials

Post by yappie »

Hi
Can any of you good peeps tell me how I can find out if my Great Uncle Patrick Ruddy b 1895 Bootle died 15/03/1917 France and memorialised on the wall at Thiepval Memorial. So far I can find no mention of him in his home town.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

If you Google 'names on Bootle War memorial' you should find a list but I know no more than that.

Thank Daggers for replying I had already done that and he is not there. I wondered if he would have been somewhere else. :(

Hi Yappie

If I am correct he lived in the Parish of St. Alexanders. This Church was destroyed in WW2 so if his name was recorded in that Church unfortunately its lost.

:) Thank you Katie I thought he may have been memorialised in St Alexander Church but hope he may have been mentioned on one of the Memorials like Derby Park.

For any of the Municipal memorials it was usual for the family to fill in the forms that generally appeared in the local paper for their names to be inscribed on the memorial. Maybe the family didn't fill the forms in.

Thank you Hilary for your reply. In all probability his parents did not complete the forms as neither could read or write.

Hope this image is helpful for you. It is from The Bootle Roll of Honour newspaper snippets which is held upstairs behind the History department desk in Crosby library. These are taken from the Bootle Times newspaper.

He is not mentioned on any Memorials on Merseyside Roll of Honour, but if you wish him to be remembered, he can be listed as missing from any Memorial and a biography can be written for him.
I have already done some who are not remembered elsewhere and they will hopefully be put on the website shortly.

Many thanks for replying and for your interest. I have a copy of the article from the Bootle Times which our Katie sent me a couple of years ago. I would be very grateful indeed if you could give him some sort of memorial. I know very little about Patrick only what I have found through research.

Thank you once again for your kindness.
