Stags Head Farm Aintree

Post by cronk11 »

My great aunt Elizabeth Scott is shown as living at Stags Head Farm Aintree in the 1911 census . I have not been able to find its location . Does anyone know? She married a Coal Merchant named Shaw from Rice Lane Aintree according to family information but I have not been able to find that marriage .

It's marked on the 1:2500 1908 map on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

Just a little bit north of the grandstand. Must be roughly where Homebase, Currys etc are these days

Hi cronk

Not sure about this marriage as don't know the christian name of the groom and how old Elizabeth was in 1911.
But there was a marriage in Sept qtr 1916
Mary E Scott and Henry Shaw - W.Derby 8b p.682

If you have some more details about them maybe we can help you fill in a few gaps

Just checked my 1938 directory and there are
G & R Shaw coal merchants Eskdale Road 9 (which I believe is near Rice Lane)

If you are looking at the 1908 map, you'll see the legend "Liverpool Blackburn and Accrington Line" next to the railway. Stags Head Farm is just to the right of the word "Line"

Happy New Year to all.
Thanks for all the help . I have had the cert. through before for the marriage of Elizaabeth aka. Bessie to Alfred Shaw but unfortunately this is not correct as her father would be William Scott b. 1858 . Elizabeths birth date is the one March 1893 Prescot 8b-753. Thanks for the info on Stags Head farm I have downloaded the image .The information an the whereabouts of Shaw's Coal Merchants is interesting . would that address still exist ? I can remember visiting as a child with my grandmother and going in through an arched gate into a courtyard with rooms at 1st floor level around, but the memory may be playing tricks.

I don't think so, check out http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html and enter Ormskirk Road, Aintree. Then I chose the 1851 - you can probably also see it on later maps also but it is visible on this one. Have open maps.google.co.uk and see at the same time where Ormskirk Road lies.

I don't find it easy to zoom in on the old-maps site, but how I did it was to hold down the ctrl key and scroll with your wheelie mouse button and this did indeed zoom in enough for me to be able to read the words Stags Head Farm - a little to the north of Stand Houses and The Grandstand (presumably part of the racecourse).

Still there on the 1899 map where the racecourse is more easily visible.

I think just called Stag Farm on the 1909 map, almost opposite Aintree Junction.

Still there on the 1928 map but more difficult to locate on the 1938 but yes it is still there.

Too built up to see it on the 1965.

Sorry, realised you were interested in Eskdale Road, which is indeed still there but perhaps not the property you are interested in.

Again maps.google.co.uk and enter Eskdale Road, Liverpool and then you can zoom into streetview to see the road as it is today.

Did Bessie and her husband have any children? Maybe that would help locate /name the husband.

Puzzled by the fact that there is only one Lancs marriage in England and Wales that fits, that in 1932, which you say is the wrong one. So, trying to confirm Elizabeth's father's name from the 1901 census, there are 2 possibles:
SCOTT, Elizabeth - 1893 - Prescot [father William]
and
SCOTT, Elizabeth - 1894 - Prescot [father James]]

How do you know which is your Elizabeth given that census ages are often out by a year or two?

This is a bit out of area but in 1932 Sep qtr an Elizabeth Scott married a George Shaw in Pontefract, Yorkshire West Riding
I know it's a bit extreme, but the initial G and later the coal merchants initial being G I just put 2 & 2 together and made 5 as I usually do

Just something to add to the mix as we are struggling a bit

I saw that one Erika but put it on the back-burner due to the location. But you could be right perhaps they married out-of-area for some reason. Maybe George Shaw had business interests or a home in or near Pontefract? It is a fact that there were many coal-mines in the Pontefract and nearby Wakefield area.

Hi,
What I was really asking is that in the absence of a marriage certificate how do you know that William is the father of the Elizabeth who married a Shaw?

Since there are 2 Elizabeth Scotts of about the right age in the 1901 with births registered in Prescot, the registry office for St Helens, one with a father James and the other with a father William, which one is at Stags Head Farm in 1911?

William is the father as he is shown with my grandfather Harold and his sister Elizabeth in the 1911 census in St Helens

Sorry, perhaps I am being thick here. Or Devil's Advocate...?
But I see nothing in the information imparted so far, apart from her name and place of birth in that census, that connects her directly to a father named William given that there were at least 5 births that could be hers. Do you have the birth cert for Elizabeth, father William, birth registered in Prescot in 1893?

The Elizabeth [bn St Helens abt 1894] with a father James in the 1901 is still living at home with her parents ten years later.
