Did your family live in or travel through Devon? From today there are free name indexes available for the baptisms, marriages and burials of that county, dating from 1558-1887. You can find them on the free genealogy website FamilySearch who previously offered family historians access to a 'browse only' collection of digitised Bishop’s Transcripts for Devon. With indexes now in place, it's simple to search by name and then be taken straight to the relevant pages in the original documents.

Bishop’s Transcripts were contemporary copies of parish registers, made by the Parish Clerk of each parish church, that were sent to the Bishop each year. They are therefore a useful alternative to the parish registers themselves, particularly if those registers have been damaged or lost. Bishop’s Transcripts can also sometimes contain additional or different information to that contained in the parish register.

Find out more about this new source at the FamilySearch website: https://www.familysearch.org/collection/2515875.
