Don't Forget Banns Registers

Often when searching for where somebody has come from, or lived prior to a marriage, there may be a clue in a Banns Register - but many are not online and a visit to the Record Office to search might be needed.

I've not heard of Banns Registers before - please could someone tell me more?

When a marriage takes place "After Banns" (check just above the vicar/registrar's signature) this means the Banns have been read in both the bride and groom's parishes and so might give a clue where they lived.

Sometimes I've checked Ancestry and found only Banns registers and their database doesn't hold the marriage certificate. You will usually find them three weeks running and if the marriage didn't take place in that church, then it will have been in the other spouse's parish.

I obviously know about the 'banns being read' but didn't know I could look for them separately from the marriage certifcates. Will take another look at some of my 'brick walls'!
