Remembering Private Malcolm Gibson His Birth and Death today 18th June 1887 Killed in action at Flanders 18th June 1916
Today is the anniversary of my great grandfather’s birth and death
You met him recently on the St Cyprians project. I would like to remember him today.
Malcolm Gibson was born at 335 London Road, Glasgow, Scotland on 18th July 1887

The son of David Gibson and Janet Allan, he was the second youngest child of 6 children all born in Glasgow.
Malcolm Gibson had a few jobs in his lifetime; He began work as a labourer in the Lighting department of the city council He ended his careen as a Engineer machinist from 1913.
Malcolm Married Jessie Fyfe on 29th October 1909

In 1911 the family had grown with the addition of daughter Marion Gibson, followed by Jane H Gibson in 1913 then David in 1914 plus Mary I think 1915
During WW1 Private Malcolm Gibson served with 18th Battalion.4th Glasgow, Highland Light Infantry regiment number 5287,
On his birthday in 1916 Malcolm was killed in action in Flanders his body was never found and he is remembered with honour on a panel with others from the Somme at Thiepval Memorial

There are no photos of Malcolm’s battalion or him but here is one of Highland Light Infantry colleagues. I was surprised to see Kilts I think they would be difficult in mud.

Finally a grave marked to be recovered later. I hope that soldier found a grave of his own but it shows the care taken by colleagues to identify this soldier after this initial grave in this case marked with German shell cases.
This touched me greatly as Malcolm was never found.

Thank you for your sacrifice Rest in peace Private Malcolm Gibson my hero and great grandfather.
You were never forgotten and always loved.
Thanks
Marie
