Hugh Irving Williams

Post by Bertieone »

Those with sight of the names on the memorial, is it possible this might be H L Williams.

A Hugh Lewis Williams, 1911 census, RG14 P22319, was a Liverpool pilot, from 1871 through to 1901 he lived at, Saxon St, Crouch St, Oakfield Rd. Are these in the St Cyprian area?

Could he have been one of 16 lost to a mine, 1917.

Another straw clutching exercise. :)

It certainly looks like an I Bertie, but that is not to say the stonemason did not mistake a L for a I. We are hoping to get to see the original and I could look to see if I can locate a obit.

Wondered if the family had moved nearer to StC after Hugh married but they are still in Oakfield Road. Inconclusive.

Coming late into this one... There are only 3 H I Williams listed in Lancashire in 1910+1...

WILLIAMS, Henry Isaac aged 38 > Chorlton, Lancashire
WILLIAMS, Herbert Isaac aged 1 > Toxteth Park
WILLIAMS, Hugh Iver aged 11 > West Derby

So was he from 'across the water' in Cheshire? Only 2 such named in the county...
WILLIAMS, Henry Ivor aged 29 > Wirral, Cheshire
WILLIAMS, Howell Idres aged 6 > Nantwich, Cheshire

Or did he move to Liverpool after the census?

And could this be him?
Death: WILLIAMS, Hugh I
Unit: King's Royal Rifle Corps
Rank: T. 2 Lt.
Year: 1918
Volume: O.16
Page: 304
Record source: GRO War Death Army Officers Indices (1914 to 1921)

Haven't found this one yet in the CWCG.

DS
Halsbury Road was on the north side of Islington, not in St C's parish area, but as you say, not too far away.

When was he gazetted? This is one of those occasions when the knowledge/expertise of Promenade would be most helpful.

Always beloved by his family, first by his sister Jessie Hawken Williams and generation after generation, some were named Hugh after him. For his great niece Ann Thomas and the whole family.

There's a photo of the man and his gravestone. The transcription is defective in leaving off the g in Irving.

This appears to be his birth...

Joe D may say otherwise but I have to say that the KRRC Williams is in my view the wrong man. The London Gazette shows 'Temp. 2nd Lieutenant H.I. Williams from the General List (R.F.C.) to be Temp 2nd Lieut in the King's Royal Rifle Corps from 23 Feb 1918'. Other sources show him as Hugh IRVING Williams, not IVOR***, so I think the chance of a Liverpool link is remote.
We need a new hole to dig in!

The Memorial was dedicated July 1921. I think we need to establish if the couple who married in 1919 made their home in the St Cyprian parish. Gores Directory will establish that. Just a shame there is no Parish Magazines that have survived
