Displaced memorial - anyone up for some research?

Can you help create biographies for the heroes on this Memorial?

Displaced memorial - anyone up for some research?

Post by alcavtay »

Liverpool Diocese have approached me about a First World War Memorial they have in storage which they would like to find a home for. The memorial originally came from St Cyprian's, Edge Hill. It consists of 5 stone tablets each about 3ft high by 1 ft wide with 198 names inscribed on them.

entry for the memorial on UKNIWN http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/co ... wmSearch/1

full list of names and links to CWGC for some

The challenge is, firstly to research the memorial so that even if it remains in storage there is a record of the men commemorated on it, and secondly to try and turn up a connection to somewhere else that might encourage them to take on the memorial (a long shot, but all we've got!) Apparently the church is to be converted to residential use: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liv ... er-4877894

I thought any forum members who are interested could leave a comment on here saying which name or names they will look for and we could split it up that way? Or maybe someone has more time on their hands than me and would like to take it on as a project?

Before anybody else posts a reply I'm going to set up a sub board just for this memorial then each name can have a post of it's own, otherwise there will be mix ups.

Anybody who is going to post information, please head it up with the soldier's name.

Posted a few just to get people started. Researching a War memorial is a rewarding hobby. These names that are inscribed are just Initial and Surname. by researching individual names inscribed on a War Memorial you can put a full name to a soldier, give them a Mother and Father, a Fiancee, a Wife, a picture if one was published, an obituary notice and he ceases to be an Initial and a Surname.

If it had not been closed [another sad story], the former Liverpool Scottish Museum on the corner of Botanic Road would have been ideal - a long stone's throw from St Cyprian's and still in its former parish, and in the building which had housed a leading Artillery Territorial unit. Let's hope a new home can be found for the memorial plaques.

Could contact Lord Mayor Gary Millar. It is intended war memorials which have now become adrift from their original locations, through demolition or redevelopment of the buildings, are to be given a permanent Place of Honour in St Georges Hall. Contact Gary Millar at the Lord Mayors office, the present Lord Mayor Gary Millar is actively involved in this project.

Katie and I met with Gary Millar last week and mentioned this, he didn't have any suggestions!

I think they should be accorded a place on honour and where better than St George's Hall. Blue do you remember where you heard about that?

Any chance you could make enquiries as to whether that "intention" has actually been picked up from an accredited source, or whether it is just an idea that people would like to happen.

I know the Lord Mayor is involved in a project that's looking to display some memorials temporarily... but I can't imagine St George's Hall taking them on permanently, that would require (at the least) listed building consent for each memorial and there would be problems with which memorials they would accept and where they would draw the line and say no more. I agree it would be wonderful if it could happen but fear it is wishful thinking :(

Following the recent re-dedication ceremony at the Liverpool museum of the rescued from sale on ebay and paid for by Gary Millar, Stanley Abbattoir War memorial.

In the company of colleagues it was indicated after a short period of time on display in the museum foyer this memorial would be moved from this temporary siting to a permanent new home. This was later confirmed in a press briefing as being St Georges Hall along with any other memorials, rescued from similar fate.

Seems a copy of that press briefing needs to be found. Bit of arm twisting time needed.

If anyone is interested enough to visit the Record Office, there might be information about the memorial and those recorded on it in one of the following:

ref: 283 CYP minutes of the parochial church council, 1906-1992.
ref: 283.42753 - A History of St Cyprian's Church, 1881-1992.

I cannot get there myself for some time.

It just so happens Daggers that I am going to do that to-day, however the parochial minutes seem to have gone walkabout, hopefully the information will be in the other records.

It's good to have somebody connected to the heroes on the memorial, I wonder if, as an interested party, you could make an enquiry to the Council to see if they would be informative about any plans they might have for resiting it. We'd love any updates.

Hello Mary and Everyone

I can always ask I need to find out whom to contact, any ideas of who would be welcome.

My own thoughts

Personally I would like the memorial stones in one of the hospitals especially the new Royal.

Hospitals are visited by so many people either as patients, staff or visitors. These places are accessible on a daily basis for many and there is the possibly to sheltered and protected the memorials

Art on a wall is nice but it has no memories. Every family was touched by WW1 and later WW2 either relatives, neighbours and friends lived through it, loved ones Killed or injured by it, whole families psychologically disturbed by it, no help would be given.

We should remember our hero's they sacrificed so much for our freedom and these days we need to remember now, more than ever.

Today’s world threatens us all with pockets of violence and volatile politics, war comes closer every day those lessons our soldiers taught us must be remembered. Lets hope it protects tomorrow.

Any other ideas?
Thank you our hero's "Lest we forget"

Marie

P.S. I just thought of someone who might listen although he is the West Derby Labour Councillor, Tony Conception. He is very nice,Hard working and wise and I know him because he was a governor at a school I was a parent governor. West Derby is my area so I will try an email.

If you know anyone else I will email them too.

The original thought was that all displaced memorials might have been given a place at - was it the Town Hall or St George's? but I think there might be too many for the accommodation.

I suspect a decision as to where might already have been made by now, but it would be a good idea to ask your Councillor if he knows of the plans or alternatively he might know which person/department within the Council to make enquiries of.
