Can you help create biographies for the heroes on this Memorial?

Hello Mary and Everyone.

I Emailed Tony Conception last night here is a copy of the Email he sent me. I have not included his email address because it was a personal one from my governor days.

Dear Marie,

Many thanks for your kind words, I will of course help in any way I can. It would be great if a home can be found for these Memorial Stones, this year is the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and Liverpool is currently remembering and celebrating the role of our Armed Forces and the brave soldiers who gave their lives in the Great War. I'll make some enquires and contact you again with any suggestions.

Best Wishes.

Tony.

That's great, and more interest in them than was shown by a councillor I contacted! Fingers crossed that he can come up with something.

As far as I know, there have been no suitable suggestions for places to site the memorial, the diocese has ruled out other churches.

It might be worth seeing if the Echo are interested, there's more of a story now that a family member is involved - and with that fantastic photo too!

Amanda

P.S. thanks for all the information you have contributed Marie and for taking up the quest to find a new home for the memorial. They shall not be forgotten!

Hello Alcavtay, MaryA and Everyone

I will keep you up to date with developments. I will see how Tony gets on then the Echo would be a good idea.

I would like to see the stones in a place that is easy for people to see. I find people don't go out their way for anything these days. If you can see them easily it will provoke thoughts and prayers and remembrance.

I worry that the Town hall and similar civic buildings although great places, and an honour if accepted will have less of a daily impact and then just be remembered on 11th November at 11 am.

I wonder if these memorials almost need taking to the people to have the impact they deserve. Our soldiers sacrifice was so great it would be good to remember them every day.

Then I suppose one could argue that if too familiar a sight then our hero's will not be remembered and appreciated how we would like or they deserve. So no place will be perfect. They deserve the best place we can find.

It sure will be a comfort to know when the stones have a home and our soldiers can be remembered forever.

Kind regards

Marie

You are right, our heroes deserve to be remembered all year around. I thought you'd be interested in the National Memorial Arboretum, I've posted a little about it and a link to some photographs, see here http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... 24&t=13950

I think that if memorials are to be resited, consideration should be given to their original location, especially if they were in a parish church. It would be a shame if St Cyprian's plaques were to be removed from the Edge Hill area. There is now a group of parishes which includes St Mary's, Edge Hill, under the umbrella of 'All Saints'. If anyone has knowledge or contact, that might be an avenue worth exploring.

I believe Alcavtay has already made enquiries down that line, the Diocese aren't being terribly helpful ..... unless somebody knew some way of twisting their arm

Hi Daggers, MaryA and everyone.

I understand that the churches are not authorised or even considered by the diocese.
I can see what you mean about keeping it in the Edge Lane area. It would be nice but cannot see it.
It could go back in the St Cypriot’s church building when regenerated, but if it is housing it will be restricted from a security point of view and only those that live there would see it.

I would be sad because my family had been searching for the memorial stones to see my great grandfather’s name and found them through church links in the October when my grand uncle arranged for the photo to be taken.

That why I liked the New Royal Hospital as a fitting place because it is not too far from Edge Lane. Many of the families of these hero's are now scattered across the city since the original memorial was in place. My own family being one of them that moved away.

Many people end up in the Royal Hospital at some point even if just visiting friends, and then there is the staff, and volunteers and patients. It is on many bus routes so its very easy to visit. It is open very long hours and every day of the year, even more hours than civic buildings.

For me it’s important to be able to visit the memorial easy. I want it to be seen by many people as possible hopefully everyday and to be sheltered from the weather.

No Place will be perfect but hopefully we can find a good fitting home that they can be remembered every day.
Lest we forget!

Hi
Just reading all the comments and would like to add the hospital sounds a good idea its is close to St Cyprians Church could have been an area where perhaps the names recorded on the memorial could have walk though or passed on a journey to work ,shopping in town and many as CHA did lived close by.

Charles Henry Ascroft, His Father James Ascroft and Grandfather James Lowthian Ascroft all had been born in that area they had all worked for the Liverpool Corporation .So hopefully this could add some weight to the re siting of the Memorial in the hospital .

Just a thought on homes for displaced War Memorials from WW1 and WW2. At the top of Bold Street is St. Lukes, the bombed out Church. (I used to walk past this Church when I was a Office Junior working in Seel Street, never gave it a second look) Seen as a Memorial to all those who gave their lives from Liverpool during the Blitz. I have been inside this War Monument which is what I now like to know it as. Now is it not possible that this Church which still stands proudly could also be a home for our displaced memorials from both World Wars. Just a thought, as I sit here and index the Casualty lists that cover the start of WW1.

Yet another place that may be lost to those who commemorate our heroes.

Does anyone know what's happening with St Luke's? could this be a proposition for whatever group is trying to buy and preserve it as a memorial?

The last uproar on Facebook was about July, so I think this would be the latest news, however, does anybody trust Liverpool Council? http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liv ... or-7380488

On St. Lukes Website it mentions both conflicts.

http://www.stlukeliverpool.co.uk/

The reason I posted last night was I saw something on Facebook with a update and hence my thought of it being a home for displaced memorials. Let me Google and search and we can go from there. What do others think?

I have just come across another displaced WW1 War Memorial rescued from a skip on Mathew Street. Nat West took the building over and tossed the Memorial in a skip. Awaiting a copy of it from the lady who got in touch with one of our members who forwarded the details to me.

Hello Everyone

Sorry not been on for a while been busy.

I contacted Tony Concepcion to see if any progress has been made in finding a home for the St Cyprian's memorial stone's as he was making an enquiry for us.
(I had not forgot the memorial just life has been busy so not been on here for ages, miss you all.)

This is his reply from today.

Dear Marie,

I have raised this with Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Regeneration & Development Control, I understand Councillor Kennedy has discussed this with officers from the Council's Urban Design & Heritage Team. One possible suggestion involved re-locating the Memorial Stones to a new square in the Edge Lane/Edge Hill housing scheme, the new square was to be the focus for the history of the community, including civilian losses from the blitz, the Memorial Stones could be an added element. I'm not sure how far this idea has been developed, I will contact Councillor Kennedy for an update and let you know if any further progress has been made or other proposals have been considered. Hope this helps.

Best Wishes.

Tony.

When I get more information I will let you know.

Kind regards

Marie

It sounds quite fitting to be surrounded by other historical elements of the area, fingers crossed this works out.
