In 1911 the parents were at 72 Parton Street, off Edge Lane, with William, aged 15, a messenger, one of several children, born Widnes.

His Medal Index Card shows that William Robert Murphy had been numbered earlier as 724, and he earned the British War and Victory Medals (no 1914/5 Star, as he was not in the war zone earlier enough). His numbers were those issued by the Territorial Force.

[When looking for his MIC, I found another Murphy, Thomas W., also a gunner, and with numbers very close to William's: 729 then 676578, which means they almost certainly joined up together. Thomas was killed in action on 7 March 1918, and earned the three medals, having reached France on 29 May 1915. I have not yet found Thomas's family details.]

I thought Thomas might have been a brother, but this is now a red herring. Thanks for the extra info.

Liverpool Echo 17th September 1917

MURPHY-Sept 2nd, died of wounds received in action August 30, aged 22years, William Robert second son of Robert C and Ellen Murphy, 1, Wrenbury Street, Holt Road.

Deeply mourned by his sorrowing Father, Mother, Sisters and Brothers and Henry in France)

There is a verse but to long to transcribe. I will copy and send to Amanda.

I have located the family on the 1911 Census.

72, Parton Street, Fairfield

Robert Cubbins Murphy-Head-Married 42-Hairdresser-Born Birkenhead
Ellen Murphy-Wife-Married-41-Born Birkenhead
James Murphy-Son-Unm-17-Messenger-Born Birkenhead
William Murphy-Son-Unm-15-Messenger/Grocer-Born Widnes
Henry Murphy-Son-Unm-12-School-Born Birkenhead
Mary Ellen Murphy-Dau-Unm-10-School-Birkenhead
Margaret Murphy-Dau-Unm-9-School-Birkenhead
Ina Murphy-Daug-Unm-7-School
Richard Murphy-Son aged 5 or 3?-Born Birkenhead.

Now don't we have a unidentified R.C. Murphy on the War Memorial.

This is a branch of my family I have yet to get stuck in to, however I can't understand how I scooted past this name. Penny didn't drop until the last posting appeared, thanks Katie.

Ellen Murphy, nee, Barker is my Great Aunt, Maternal Grandfathers sister,

William is named after him, the child Mary Ellen named after my Grandmother.

My Mother, Ina, born 1918 is named after the child Ina Murphy (census)

Katie, is it possible to send a copy of the verse to me, thank you.
