Post by Katie »

I have the following soldier

King's Liverpool Regiment
Cosgrove
305399
Thomas
Corporal
Liverpool

Killed
Husband of Annie Cosgrove, of 56, Wilbraham Street, Liverpool.

The above soldier is recorded on the Merseyside Roll of honour site as being Killed on 30th June 1917 and his biographical details are recorded as Husband of Elizabeth Gordon, married 1913 and son of James and Bridget Cosgrove. The Thomas Cosgrove who married Elizabeth Gordon at Our Lady's of Reconciliation was the son of George Cosgrove of 87, Rose Place.

The correct details for Thomas Cosgrove killed 31st July 1917 are:-

Thomas Cosgrove married Ann Murphy in 1905, in 1911 Thomas aged 29 and Ann Cosgrove resided at 3, Egremont Buildings, Furlong Street, with Henry Cosgrove aged 3 and John Cosgrove aged 2. 3 further children were born:- Joseph 1911, Hannah 1913 and Thomas 1916.
A report of his death appeared in the Liverpool Evening Express on 14th September 1917 with the following write up.
Cpl. Thomas Cosgrove K.L.R. age 34 was killed in action on 31st July, he had been wounded once before. He had been at the front altogether about two years. Before the outbreak of war he was employed at J. Bibby and Sons - Oil cake mills. He leaves a wife and five children who reside at 56 Wilbraham Street, Scotland Road.

From my wounded Rank and File database:-

There are 2 T. Cosgroves on War Memorials Bibbys and also St. Elizabeth of Hungary R.C., Litherland. I think (could be wrong) that the T. Cosgrove on the R/C Church in Litherland is this seaman.

Liverpool Echo 2nd August 1917

COSGROVE:-June 30 through an accident whilst doing his duty on board ship Thomas (Tommy) the dearly beloved second son of Mrs. Cosgrove, of 26, Catherine Street, Litherland, buried at sea. A search of the deaths at sea states his death was due to suffocation.

Hello Katie

I am responsible for the incorrect record for Thomas Cosgrove on the St Elizabeths memorial. This was the first memorial I undertook to research and I have now found the correct biographical information which I will get updated on the site.

I found the marriage at St James, RC Church, Bootle for a Henry Cosgrove of 26 Catherine Street Linacre, son of James and Brigid Cosgrove on 30/8/1916 so this must be his brother

Thomas was the son of James and Bridget Cosgrove (Nee Lawless), parents were married 5/8/1877 at St Anne’s RC Church, Liverpool
1891 Census - 36 Romley Street, Walton – Parents James and Bridget with children James, Mary, Thomas and Henry
1901 Census – 153 Goddison Road, Liverpool – James & Bridget with Mary Thomas and Henry
1911 Census 58 Arnot Street, Walton – Mother Bridget (Head) with Thomas and Harry - She was married 33 years with 6 children born and 4 still alive

Thomas was born 19/9/1887 and was baptised 12/10/1887 at St Annes RC Church son of James and Bridget of 58 Rokesmith Street. James and Bridget also had children John born 1879 and Ann born 1883, baptisms for these children at St Annes RC and for Ann at St Oswalds RC Church.

This is the Thomas Cosgrove who died 30/6/1917 on the SS Tinteretto

Thanks for your information.
