Arnistice Day in France

Post by Barbara B »

On Sunday we will be joining in the Armistice Day ceremony in our village. We will meet outside the village hall and then walk down to the war memotrial behind the French flag carried by one of the older men.
Once there we will listen to a message sent out all over the country from the President. Then we will hear some of the children read their thoughts on the day and its significance.
Our mayor, Dominic will read the names of each of the fallen - including three from his own family. After each name we will say 'died for France'.
We will sing the Marsellaise and a wreath will be laid.
Ceremonies like this will take place all over France in towns and villages and because this is France afterwards we will return to the village hall for the 'pot d'amitie' - the cup of friendship. I'm sure the fallen of all nations would approve.
In memory of William Albert Barker killed in 1916 and commemorated on the Loos memorial.
