"The Lost Tribe of Everton & Scottie Road" by Ken Rogers
Posted: 05 Dec 2012 01:22
The Liverpool Echo's Ken Rogers takes us back to the Everton of his childhood and gives us a people's history of the old district. This is a sentimental view of old Everton but it's also realistic about the poor living conditions that would lead to the massive housing clearance programme of the 1960s. Ken pulls no punches in showing how the city's planners failed to appreciate the human element that goes into creating good neighbourhoods.
Ken tells us how his great, great grandfather Peter Rogers came to Liverpool from Northwich in Cheshire. The Rogers family lived in Hopwood Street off Scottie Road before moving up to the sloping streets of Everton. Ken does not shy away from discussion about the sectarian faultline that ran through the area and shows how people's differences have mellowed over time. I love the funny story here about the little Catholic girl who got lost on the 12th July and ended up on King Billy's horse!
