"The Liverpool Underworld: Crime in the City, 1750-1900" by Michael Macilwee
Michael Macilwee takes us on a tour of the dark side of Liverpool life in Georgian and Victorian times. Two factors appear to have made Liverpool exceptional within England when it came to crime and disorder. Firstly Liverpool was a fiercely individualistic sea port and was known to give press gangs a tough time! Secondly Liverpool received the Irish, a troubled people, in large numbers.
This book is a fascinating compilation of stories and a revealing study of crime in the city. The port and the docks created great wealth but not for everyone. Brutalising poverty and deprivation in some districts led to generations of people with no respect for law and order. It's an expensive book (if you can get hold of a copy) but a great read.

Thanks Blue, sounds a great read. I did google it to discover that the price you paid was for paperback - a hardback copy would set you back about £64!
Please also send in your review to the Journal, I'm sure it's worth letting our wider membership know about this, best mentioning that it was paperback.
