'The Liverpool Book of Days' by Steven Horton

Post by daggers »

‘The Liverpool Book of Days’ by Steven Horton is published by The History Press in Gloucestershire and priced at £9.99.

This small book has 366 entries, a page for each day of the year, with a report of some incident that took place in Liverpool on that day. Most are taken from newspapers, and some include the compiler’s comments.

As a certain newspaper used to claim, all human life is there: disasters of many kinds, murder, disease, execution, drought, riot, fire, explosion, storm, shipwreck, earthquake, air raid. Many local features are referred to: docks, churches, cemeteries, lighthouses, tunnels, statues, factories, galleries, parks, hotels, theatres, tenements, schools, litter, charity.

Many of the city’s famous names appear, including Gladstone, Chavasse, Huskisson, Braddock, Shankley, Duncan, Beatles, Tarleton, and royalty, vandals, drunks, robbers, smugglers, loan sharks, slaves, orphans, hooligans.

We find many institutions such as concerts, the Grand National, football, greyhounds, Brookside, ships, trains, trams, planes, mail coaches, car factories, war, peace.

This is a book to dip into, and it has much to interest those who enjoy the varied life and history of our city.
