Comparison of two photos & give opinion please

Post by cjc1867 »

Hi
I found a picture on ebay and in the end I bought it. I just want to know if you think it is the same person or not. There are similarities but I would like your opinion please. The photos are on my website below:

Is there any website that I could post it to and get possibly a yes or no?

Thankyou for looking

Colin

Hi Colin and welcome to the forum.

How interesting to come across a photograph that might be connected on a site such as ebay - there must have been something to suggest to you that it might have been Thomas Crawford.

In my totally inexpert opinion I would agree with you that there are certainly similarities but looking at the ear the lobe looks shorter on the younger person - possibly they are related rather than the same person?

There are a number of photographic experts who help out on the Rootschat Photograph and Dating Board who I suspect would be able to tell you if the clothing worn by the younger man would be expected to be fashionable at the time the older man was of that age.

Hope you also get some opinions on here too.

Hi
Thanks for looking, I'm just waiting for a confirmation email from rootschat so I'll give them a chance.

The older Thomas Crawford was taken in 1932, obviously I don't know when the other possible one was taken. The ear does look similar but with age would that part start to sag or get longer?

See you had a good day at LRO, has anything improved? I'm going on Thursday so I probably find out then.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Colin,

Actually I was wondering if the difference in the earlobes meant that they were different people, not the same one .... don't really want to spoil things for you though.

Yes I ws pleased at the results I achieved at the RO especially in view of the resulting connection between Doreen and Sue. Good luck with your own searches when you go.

Hi Colin :D

They do look very alike don't they :) The only thing that puzzles me is the shirt collar. The one on the younger man looks much more modern to me (Edwardian maybe) than that of the older man (victorian?)

But then I know nothing of fashion, then......or now

Hi all
Have a look at nostrils, in one photo you can see right up them, the other nothing.
One face is longer than the other.
I'm not sure.

I notice the jury's still out on Rootschat I hope you get some opinions from some of the other experts on there, particularly as I would have tended to agree with Simone about the clothing, but as I said before, I have only an opinion, no knowledge so don't take anything I say as truth!

It is suprising what turns up on ebay. I have a group of medals to Samuel Foster Douglas, who served with the 55th Divisional Signal Company in WW1. I had the basic info on him but that was all. A few weeks ago, I typed "sapper" into the ebay search engine and up poppedhis photo!

Happily I was able to secure it for my records.

I hope your find proves to be your man.

Thankyou all for having a look at my photograph. I've had mixed reactions and I know we wont know for certain but it gave us something to ponder.

Oh well it was wishful thinking.

Many thanks to them who did reply.
