Nathaniel Henry Glenton

Post by Mark Abbott »

I am currently involved in researching this chap, who served with the 6th Volunteer Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment from June 1902 to 1st April 1908. On the formation of the Territorial Army, he enlisted in the 9th King's and served with them until 1916 whan he became "time expired". His service did not end as he joined the 13th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment and served with them in France until being wounded in late 1918.

On his service papers, he is shown as living at 18 Cicero Terrace, Everton. Does anyone know if this still exists?

On the 1881Census, his family are shown as living in Apsley Buildings in Wavertree. I assume this does not exist, but does anyone know where it was and do any photos exist?

May thanks

Mark
I found Cicero Terrace on a street guide of around 1960s, but it is clear space on a current A-Z, so almost certainly cleared away.
I cannot help on Apsley Buildings - sorry.

Apsley Buildings

Post by dickiesam »

Hi,
Don't know if this helps but the Apsley Buildings enumeration pages (and there are a lot of families in the Buildings) are beween Wellington Road and Mill Row. Might help to locate them on an old map.
Cheers,

Hi Mark
I had a walk around the area in 1881 which didn't help much so tried 1891 which seemed a lot clearer (Enumeration district 7 Wavertree).
If you look on Google maps it's in the area at the top right of Wellington Road where it meets Picton Road. I think I've pinpointed it more or less to the area that is now an eyesore of a mini-industrial estate.

Sorry I couldn't find it on an old map - the one I have has the public baths on it and nothing in the area to the west of it where now stands the industrial estate. It probably means that those buildings were knocked down before 1908.

No photos either I'm afraid although if you go to
http://inacityliving.piczo.com/?g=44922707&cr=7
you'll find on the 7th row down, Blowers Buildings which was just around the corner. I presume that they would be of a similar style to Apsley Buildings.

Hope this is some help even if it only narrows it down for someone with a better map.
