I am researching the above, who served in 6th King's and 1 Grenadier Guards in WW1. He died of wounds on 5th August 1918 and his family purchased the University playing fields as a memorial to him.

Does anyone know of if he is commemorated on any memorial in the city?

hi Mark,

Not sure what type of/more info you're after. I googled him and came up with another post you made on another forum, which has some info.

Just back from a break. Found this [part of] reply from the University archivist, which does not help much. He also suggested the KLR as a source.
I hope to get to the field later and will examine the plaque which used to be there, if Tesco have not built over it!

I think the type of/more info Mark is after can be determined from his question:

"Does anyone know of if he is commemorated on any memorial in the city?"

An inscription on the 'new' pavilion at the University of Liverpool's Wyncote playing fields reads:
"These grounds were presented to the University of Liverpool for the recreational use of students in memory of Geoffrey Hughes who died on active service in France in August 1918 aged 33. This pavilion received a Class 1 Civic Trust award in 1963 the year of its completion."

I believe that the 'G.Hughes' on the memorial plaque of the Liverpool Exchange Newsroom on Exchange Flags commemorates the same man.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Debt of Honour website lists Hughes as a Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards, and gives his age as 32.

Apparently, it was found many years ago in a skip sfter the original pavillion had been knocked down. Happliy it was rescued and found its way into the hands of a former Grenadier Guardsman who handed it to me.

His medals used to be in a friends collection which was disposed of some years ago.

Hi Mark,

According to this website he is commemorated with others on the war memorial at All Hallows Parish Church in Allerton:

Thanks for the link. I had suspected he was well off, but £70 million!

One day I hope to discover the current whereabouts of his medals.

I can add that he is named, albeit with an extra initial 'F', on the memorial at Liverpool Cricket Club - he was a member of that club and of Liverpool (Rugby) Football Club - which I have been researching for the past few weeks with help from this Forum. Many thanks.

I think there must have been a factory for men like Hughes - there are plenty like him in the photos I have found.
Send me a pm with your email if you want some more to pin up! Choice of uniforms, moustaches etc.
