Hello,

Hereby a request from the Netherlands.

First of all, excuse my English, I'm depending on google translate. With this I would like to ask you if you can help me. My name is Dirk Paagman and I am a history teacher and historian from Schijndel, a village in the south of the Netherlands. I wrote a book about the liberation of Schijndel on October 23, 1994 by the 51st Highland Division and in particular about the 5th Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.

During the liberation of Schijndel, 16 British soldiers of the 5th Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders died. They are now located in the Uden War Cemetery, Bergen op Zoom War Cemetery and in the cemetery of St Martin's Church in Sint-Oedenrode. In the meantime I have been able to trace a photo of 7 of the 16 Cameron Highlanders and found more information. I consider it my life's duty to collect a photo of all the fallen Cameron Highlanders to honor them for their sacrifice to give us freedom during World War II.

Private William Lloyd, Service Number 2933443, died 23/10/1944, Aged 27, 5th Bn. Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, was one of the fallen soldiers who tried to liberate Schijndel. I am looking for more information about William Lloyd and also a picture. Can you help me with that?

William Lloyd was born in 1917 in the Toxteth Park area of Liverpool to James Lloyd and Amy (nee Lee). He had two brothers, James (born 1915) and George (born 1919). Before joining the army, he worked as a packer in a flour mill. William seems to have married a Nellie Kidson at St Peter, Aintree, Liverpool, in 1941. They do not appear to have had any surviving children. But there is a possible West Gorton connection. This is interesting because in November 1943, banns for intended marriage were read for a William Lloyd of St Gabriel parish, Toxteth Park and a Sarah Ann Peak of the parish of All Saints, West Gorton, Manchester.

I would like to use his story and photo for a series about fallen British soldiers at Schijndel for the local newspaper so that we will never forget these heroes, but also to get to know these soldiers well.

My thanks are great,

kind regards,

Dirk Paagman

Hi Dirk,

I'm sure you have thought of this already, but if not, try contacting the Highlanders Museum to see if they have any photographs which may be relevant to your search. There's nothing on their website to indicate that they are closed for enquiries during the current pandemic measures.
