Naval WW1 Medal Rolls

Post by steveflan »

All

I am doing a little bit of research into the Great Uncle of my father-in-law.

John Henry Aspinall was one of the many who lost their lives on HMS Vanguard (The 100 year anniversary was yesterday).

I've found his entry in the Naval War Medal Rolls on Ancestry but am a bit flummoxed with a couple of abbreviations.

The rolls shows me he was awarded the Star, Victory and British Empire medals.

In the 'How issued or disposed of column' it says Ww which I assume is something to do with his widow as he was married.

In the 'Remarks' column it says I C 1133/1917 which I'may assuming is something to do with the fact that he died in 1917 (In combat?)

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers Bertieone. Do you know if Ww stood for widow? I've seen that Mr stood for mother.

Steve,

I can't say for sure if Ww is for Widow, though it makes sense.

I only remember the IC from looking it up some months ago, I'll see if there's anything on Google.
