I have a lot of information on Joseph's death in WW1. He died on 4th March 1917 of his wounds and I have photos of his war grave in Mailly Maillet in France. The only thing I don't know is how he got his wounds. Can anybody please advise on how I could find out. Thank you.

I would suggest contacting the Liverpool Museum as they have a good military section, they may have more information than is available online.

In September there is usually held the Military Day down there with a number of Experts to help with your queries and also usually somebody who has copies of the War Diaries, they may contain some detail.

It's not clear if any provide the level of detail that you hope to find.

There may be a War Diary for the Company available from the National Archives, but it's unusual compared to the normal Battalion War Diary... Some of the military specialists may be able to advise.

The CWGC page Grave Registration Document shows that there were relatively few burials at the time Joseph was buried.

There were just two men from the 9th Battalion Welsh Regiment and then two from the 22nd Battalion Manchester Regiment. Maybe Joseph's Company was providing machine gun support to one of these Battalions? Perhaps the 9th Welsh and 22nd Manchester were part of a rotation? If you haven't already got them, it would surely be interesting to order the war diaries of these two Battalions, just in case there's something interesting.
