I'm looking for further records of William, my Grandfather George's elder brother Born Prescot I think June Q 1867 /8 the first child of my Great Grandad John & wife Catherine Doherty he joined the Royal Artillery At Liverpool on 19th November 1885 described as a carter age 19 but willing to serve for 12 years Re-engaged to complete 21 years 30th June 1897 He was Posted to
India ,Halifax, Discharged on termination of Service Long service & Good Conduct Medal and 4 Good Conduct Badges a Chelsea Pensioner 1901 Census he was with the Royal Garrison Artillery St Helier Jersey a Gunner 34 with Wife Emily 32 Daughter Emily Louise 2 Born Millbrook Cornwall a.d Son George Sidney Elliott 4 Months born Jersey he married Emily Grist in September q.1887 at Portsea Island 1911 has William 43 with wife Catherine 29 Married 4 years with 1 child Elsie May Dau. 10 months. b.Liverpool and both Margaret & George are with them at 74 Sessions Rd. Kirkdale What I'm looking for is his birth,attestation Papers Medal records or anything else to confirm he is who I think he is I found a record for William b. Prescot June Q 1867 8 b. 681 12 years ago and got it back not Known re sent it )ct 2016 got it back no trace resent it to the gen.reg. office on line to the new service just got it back no trace again VERY frustrating ( Trouble is His mother Catherine Doherty /Dougherty Born in Ireland made her mark on My Grandad's birth certificate gave her name as formerly HYTON crossed out and Inserted HUYTON but on His Marriage gave his Name as HIGHTON and that's what we have been ever sinceanother thing William was born 1867 John and catherine Married in 1871 ?...in R.G.11/3674 William is withe them as Son age 16 1871 R.G. 10/3943 she is in Great Bolton working in the Cotton Mills 1861 R.G.9/2808 Catherine is in New Bury Sorry this has been so long but I wanted to put all the information I had down

I think this is John and Catherine's marriage, I think you need to get this marriage to see if either John or Catherine were widows at the time of their marriage.

My guess is that William was born as William Dougherty/Doherty but brought up by John.

I have the Marriage Cert. of John and Catherine Parish Church Prescot 5th Feb. Batchelor and spinster both full age John signed Catherine made her mark fathers George Huyton John Dougherty John Dougherty came over from Longford Ireland with his wife Alice Nee Seery Came over between 1837 (Catherine) and (Mary) (1851 census) Bertieone you might have cracked it I will send for this Birth Cert.

You now need to look for a birth certificate for William as a Dougherty or Doherty.

I agree that the birth found by Bertieone does look correct however, having a Dougherty line in my tree I would say never rule out possible miss-spellings. One of my Dougherty's was transcribed as Dockerty once!!!

The List of Mass Spellings in my Tree is legend From Highton Through Barlow and Trevaskiss to Ormrod & Pearce my first with Huyton and being A learner all those years ago I said no it couldn't be mine as mine were Highton as you say treat every discovery with suspicion
