Hi,
Do any of the military historians know which local regiments were in the vicinity of Portalegre, Portugal in 1812? If so, can enlistment records be accessed for those regiments?
Thank you.
Regards,
Jennifer

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Way out of the timespan I'm becoming familiar with but I had a bit of a google and found http://www.portugal-info.net/alentejo/portalegre.htm
There is some background prompted by a letter despatched from there http://berryhillsturgeon.com/NapWar/Hil ... legre.html

Just as an aside, there are some beautiful pictures of the town here http://badajozcapitalenlafrontera.com/p ... ingles.htm

Regiments did not have much in the way of local affiliation until 1880s, and recruited wherever they were stationed. Sorry, but I do not know much about researching enlistments for that period. Findmypast do have some records but I have not used them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should explain - I am looking for the origins of a Samuel Powell who was transported to Australia in 1813 after being courtmartialled in Portalegre. I'm not definitely sure he was from Liverpool, just that I found a baptism record for a person of that name born in the right year (1789) in Liverpool. I thought if he joined a local regiment I may have been able to confirm whether or not I'm on the right track through regimental records. It's not a common name, but unfortunately not exactly uncommon, either!

Regards,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

The Samuel Powell you refer to, transported 1813, has under the heading (Native Place) South Wales.
I take this as his place of birth, just worth noting.
