Hi Everyone

I'm really up a blind alley here as I don't have any photos of anything but my Dad was b. 9th Oct 1900 Name William Joseph Cross.

I have a suspicion that he was in the Liverpool Scottish but how can I find out more? I've searched on Ancestry but couldn't find anything?

Are there any miltary experts out there who can find out anything about my Dad who would have been 39 at the outbreak of WW2.?

Thanks in advance folks !!

Post 1920 army records are still with army. As next of kin you can apply for them. It costs £30 and takes up to a year.

I hope Dickiesam wakes up soon and see's this, he has recently sent for some and will be able to tell you better, I know it did take ages before they came.

OK! OK! I heard you!

Hi Brimo,
Go to https://www.gov.uk/government/organisat ... ce-records
On the left there is a list of links. Click on Requests for personal data and Service records and follow the instructions.

As MaryA says the records will cost you £30. Mine took just under 6 months which is par for the course, so patience is needed. The Records people will keep you updated on the progress of your application. The delay is due to big demand and small staff!

The records will not necessarily have all the 'minute' details of your father's Army life, but it will have information from enlistment to discharge and where he was in between.

Will they let me know if he didn't have an army career. It might be that at 39 he might have just been in the territorial but it would be good to find out?

There is a book written about the Liverpool Scottish in the First World War called Bravest of Hearts. As well as giving autobiographical lay details of those that died it also has many details of other soldiers. I went to the library this afternoon (2 of them) to see if it mentioned Cross but it didn't.

Do you have any cousins who may have heard their parents speaking of your dad and may have some information?

With my Dad being born in 1900 I think he was in the Scottish regiment either as a territorial or during WW2.

Thanks for looking !!

I have spoken with one cousin that I found very recently but she doens't know anything about his army career, if he had one to speak of ?
