Gilbert Rogers, Artist in the RAMC, Great War
Gilbert Rogers, Artist in the RAMC, Great War
I am researching the life of this Liverpool artist. He was a portrait painter before the Great War, enlisted into the Royal Army Medical Corps in Nov 1915 and served in France and Flanders. At the end of the war he was involved in organising paintings and models for the Medical Section of the Great War Exhibition of the Imperial War Museum, Crystal Palace,1920. I would love to make contact with any of his descendants still living in the Liverpool area. His younger brother was Guy Rogers of Guy Rogers Furniture, Speke, a well-known furniture manufacturer which supplied Heal in London. His war paintings can be seen on the bbc 'paintings' website. Any information/links would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Gilbert Rogers, Artist in the RAMC, Great War
In 1911 he was living at 200 Upper Warwick Street, Liverpool with mother Sarah Jane (Widow) B 1855 at Birkenhead. Gilbert was born 1882 at Freshfield, and was a Painter(Artist) working on his own account. Sister Gladys Noel Rogers born 1884 and brother Guy born 1888 both at Freshfield. (Mother married 30 years with 5 children born and still alive)
1901 at the same address with parents William (born 1838 at Carnarvon) and Sarah Jane and children William (1881), Gilbert, Gladys Noel and Guy.
1891 at 14 Falkner Street, Liverpool - Parents with Harry (1879), William, Gilbert, Gladys N and Guy.
Parents William Rogers and Sarah Jane Searle were married at St James' Church, New Brighton in December quarter 1877
Brother Guy Rogers was married 1/7/1913 to Hilda Maud Walton at St Clements, Toxteth Park and a possible child was William L Rogers born September quarter 1913 at Prescot with maiden name of mother as Walton.
Hope this will help a little.
Eileen

Re: Gilbert Rogers, Artist in the RAMC, Great War
Hello Sally,
I believe this to be Gilbert's birth. Freshfield [Formby] would have been covered by the Ormskirk Registry Office. See: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/dist ... skirk.html
Birth: ROGERS, Gilbert
Registration district: Ormskirk, Lancashire
Year of registration: 1881; Dec qtr
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 792
Found deaths that could be the brothers. The death certs would give you the the informant's name and relationship to the deceased as well as addresses. Gilbert's age is very slightly out but that is often down to the informant making a guesstimate.
Death: ROGERS, Gilbert
Registration district: Birkenhead, Cheshire
Year of registration: 1956; Jun qtr
Age at death: 74
Volume no: 10A; Page no: 59
Death: ROGERS, Guy
Registration district: Poole, Dorset
Year of registration: 1960; Jun qtr
Age at death: 72
Volume no: 7C; Page no: 642

Re: Gilbert Rogers, Artist in the RAMC, Great War
Many thanks for all the posts. Some of the information was known already but some was not so it was very very useful. I do appreciate the time taken to do this for me.
I have another question regarding the RAMC - did they recruit all over the country or have particular areas they visited to recruit?
Sally
