Gunner Hugh Baxter-Royal Field Artillery

Post by Katie »

I have the following soldier whose death was reported in the Catholic Herald 2nd November 1918

Royal Field Artillery
Baxter
24391
Hugh
Gunner
Ormskirk
Died
of Derby Street, Ormskirk
2nd-Nov-1918 Catholic Herald
No record on CWGC or SDGW.

Luckily his pension record has survived which states that he was discharged on 26th April 1917. It also states that he died of Pneumonia at 43 Derby Street, Ormskirk. On his Pension record his date of death is recorded as 21st November 1918, yet the report of his death in the Herald is 2/11/1918. Can any of our members from the Ormskirk area look in the local paper or St. Anne's Ormskirk for his burial so I can give him a accurate date of death.

I wonder if he could be a IFTC case. Would the CWGC take his pension record?

Death was registered Dec qtr 1918

MIs for St Anne Ormskirk are at Lancashire Record Office.

The local paper is on film at ormskirk Library.

Can't promise when but at some point when I'm there I'll have a look.

Thanks Hilary its so I can give him a correct date of death. I have another Soldier discharged 1917 with Gun Shot wounds awarded the Military Medal died on 5th November 1918. He is not Commemorated. Think I need to look at ways of getting some funds or setting up a Committee to see if we can get them on the CWGC I don't like sending them to IFTC all the time.

Remembering Private Robert Alty Died 5th November 1918 Military Medalist.

I would stay with the IFTC contacts, Katie. They have access to CWGC and know the ropes about what is needed to obtain recognition. I think they also have some funds for getting death certs.
