Hello all,
this is my first post here but there are a few familiar names, for those of you I haven't met yet you can read about my project here: http://www.thewarmemorial.blogspot.co.uk
Here's one of the names that I need some help with, the only information I have is his name Bertie L HILL, the fact that he died during WW1 and that he or his family were parishioners of St James, Toxteth circa 1920.
I have looked through the BMD, census, medal cards and CWGC records and and have only found one person who has the middle initial of L and was from Liverpool. Herbert Lloyd HILL
I have census information for 1881-1901 and the CWGC record of his death as a merchant seaman. I do not have anything that connects him to the St James area of Liverpool though so I am hoping to find somebody who has him in their family tree who may know more about it.
Any thoughts gratefully received!

Re: Herbert Lloyd HILL- Liverpool
Have you tried Bertram? Also, you probably know that second names were often ignored by the services on enlistment.

Re: Herbert Lloyd HILL- Liverpool
I usually do it the other way around, see how many possibles there are in the area using BMD and the 1911 census then look for them all in various death records including military casualties. That way I can use the middle names to help narrow things down. I assume that if the family used a middle initial on the memorial they would have used it in census returns etc.
I've used all the 'Bert' names I can think of (Albert, Hubert, Robert, Bertram and Herbert as well as Bert and Bertie) to search the BMD records with the middle initial of L and have found only 3 born in Lancashire (he could have been born elsewhere - more assumptions)
Herbert Lloyd Hill died in WW1
Robert Leytham Hill died in infancy.
Robert Leigh Hill b 1898 but he survived until 1964
So, Herbert Lloyd is my best bet for further research, if I can disprove it's him I widen the search, if it is him then I'm happy

It looks as though you have worked through all the possibilities. Do you know about 'Geoff's Search Engine' which allows searches of the CWGC site with fewer inputs? If you google that, you can choose between his WW1 and 2 sites. I have just entered Hill and Liverpool, but the two dozen which came up gave nothing better than your own possible solution.

Thanks Katie.
Hi Daggers, I didn't know about Geoff's Search Engine, I'll have to have a look at that.
