Registration of death while serving in the Navy.

If a seaman dies while working at sea away from home ports where would his death be registered if a) he was in the merchant navy, and b) if he was in the royal navy?

My ever-elusive great-grandfather had died before the marriage of my grandfather in 1915. On the marriage certificate it states his father is 'Ships Officer'.
This means his death was between the birth of my grandfather in 1888 (minus 9 months) and the marriage 1915. If the death occured during WW1 where would I begin looking?

My grandfather was married in West Derby, Liverpool, but as yet I don't know if hewas born and lived there.

Clutching at straws now to try to find the family.

IF he was a war death he should also appear on the Commonwealth war graves Commission site.

Many thanks for the reply Hilary. I will have a look at the records you suggest.

I don't have great grandfather in any census. I only have his name: John Henry Harrison because it is on my grandfathers' marriage certificate. I don't know if my grandfather was born in Liverpool. I know he was married in Liverpool.

I keep hoping I can think of other records to investigate.

I imagine John Henry would be born about 1860/65. My problem is that maybe he had a different occupation before WW1 and joined up for the war. He had died by 1915. (my grandfathers' marriage)

This is the only information I have, apart from an army service record. N. 5457 Kings Liverpool Regiment. I can't make out if it is Melbourne or Melville Street on there.

My grandfather was called James Henry Harrison, although on his marriage certificate he was Henry James Harrison, age 27, Engine Fitter, 8 Melville Street, Everton, Father John Henry Harrison (deceased) Ships Officer.
Date of Marriage: 18 November 1915 to May Kathleen Davies at Stanley Park Peoples Mission, corner of Walton Lane and Fountains Road, Kirkdale

While I have been doing this I have realised that on my fathers' school admission record 1925, it states that the address is 8 Melbourne Street, Everton. It is also 8 Melbourne Street, Everton in 1926 when my aunty was admitted to school.

Is it possible to do an address search to see if my great grandfather John Henry Harrison was living at one of these addresses.
