According to SDGW and CWGC the above Soldier died on the 28th May 1918
His name was published in the Casualty lists 14th July 1917 which made me query the date of death
Luckily his service papers have survived and his date of death on his service record is 28th May 1917. I will send a request to the Commonwealth War Graves to see if they can correct this error. (Details below)

You are on the ball Katie, it must be an easily made mistake, perhaps a typo.

Had a reply regarding a error on date of death for Rifleman Pickett were his death is recorded as 9th April 1915 when in fact he was Killed in action 9th April 1918 and here is their reply so it looks as if I will get the same reply for Sergt James Callon. Not finished with this yet!
Date: 25 October 2011 Dear Miss Donaldson Thank you for your e mail of 13th September. Please accept our apologies for the delay in reply: due to the high volume of enquiries received by our offices we currently have a backlog we are working to clear. With regard to:
Rank: Rifleman
Surname: PICKETT
Forenames: WILLIAM JOHN
Service No: 381124
Unit: 1st/6th Bn.
Regiment: The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Date of Death: 9 April 1915
YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, Panel 4 and 6.
I would explain that our records are based on information provided to the Commission after the war by the relevent Service Authorities and as such we record the date of death as seen above. As you mention, this is also the date shown by the independent publication 'Soldiers Died in the Great War' . We are always prepared to consider amendments to our records however I am afraid we would require to receive a copy of his death certificate, along with the obituary notice which I understand you have, and any other official documentation you may have, before being able to do so.
I am sorry to disappoint you in this respect but trust you will appreciate this is simply to ensure accuracy.
Kind Regards

I think you would have to go to the source of the information - ie "the relevant Service Authority" since I know you won't have the death certificate for all these brave men, the obituary notices have to be backed up with more evidence. I hope they spend time rectifying these errors so as to make subsequent records correct.

Update of William John Pickett.
An error report has been sent to Terry Denham for this soldiers record to be corrected. Also as he is recorded on the wrong memorial which is the Menin Gate, this will be corrected. I'm going back to bed.

Would not have been able to do it without the assistance of IFTG and Promenade.
