Following the posting of these extra photographs, a member of the Great War Forum responded "I assume a mounted infantryman wouldn't wear a sword, so looks like either Cheshire Yeomanry or Pembroke Yeomanry."

We have since discovered a few more family documents, one of which gives details of the son/grandson of the gentlemen who we believed might have been the one in the photograph, this one born approximately 1907, George Thomas Powell in Birkenhead did indeed serve in the Cheshire Yeomanry around 1926. I think that we have been assuming the photograph was older that it actually is and that the mystery has now been solved for us. Thank you so much to our Military Genies on both forums.

Glad that's sorted for you. I had an ongoing niggle about the lad's haircut. Didn't look right for Victorian or Edwardian eras.
