Thanks Hilary

I don't think this is going to get solved, This is a reply taken from the Great War Forum.

"From the 1915 Valuation Rolls for 18 Morningside Gardens, Edinburgh : -

Owner : Mrs. Margeret Watson Rigg
Tenant Occupiers : William Forgie, Robert John Harris, Mrs. Elizabeth Munro, Gardiner Turner and Mrs. Jessie Will

Assuming Grace Morter had stayed at this address, it would look as if she had left (possibly when her son was killed??) by the time the valuation rolls were compiled.

Captain P M Morter is on the Southport War Memorial

Someone must have filled the forms in for him to be there.

The other forum, with useful help from members here, especially Katie, have almost concluded that the two names were published in newspapers as a means of obtaining a pension or similar. No army or death records for either of the Morters has been found. If there is any archive at Southport about the memorial there, it could hold a clue about how P.M. Morter's name was contributed.

To add to your post Daggers, there is a lack of a birth record for both men, a lack of a marriage record for the 'father', and a lack of anything on record for the mother.

Probably time to draw a line and explode the myth of the Morters.

Hear hear. However I have some other suspect obituary notices that I have come across. I might do a research on them, just to see if there is a pattern. For instance did these alleged deaths take place when major offensives happened with a heavy loss of life? etc etc.
