Problem solving time- Private James or Thomas Kean

Post by Katie »

I have the following soldier:

Lancashire Fusiliers
Kean
2367
J
Corporal
Liverpool
26th November 1917
Died
24th-December-1917

I have just come across the following obituary notice

Liverpool Echo 5th-Dec-1917

Kean:- November 26th died in hospital on active service, previously wounded at the Dardenelles, aged 24yrs. Lance Corporal Thomas Kean, second son of James Kean:-From Dad and all.

This is his entry from SDGW

Name: James Kean
Birth Place: Kirkdale, Lancs
Residence: Bootle, Lancs
Death Date: 26 Nov 1917
Death Location: Salonika
Enlistment Location: Liverpool
Rank: L/Corporal
Regiment: Lancashire Fusiliers
Battalion: 12th Battalion
Number: 2367
Type of Casualty: Died
Theatre of War: Balkan Theatre

I have been onto the National Archives Documents online and he is recorded as

Medal card of Kean, James
Corps: Lancashire Fusiliers
Regiment No: 3367
Rank: Private

Their is also a medal card for a

Medal card of Kean, James T
Corps: Lancashire Fusiliers
Regiment No: 48591
Rank: Private

I have searched for a birth registration for James Kean and I have ruled out the one registered 1894. I did find a birth Registration for a Thomas Kean (see below)

Births Dec 1892
Kean Thomas
W. Derby 8b 285 Source Freebmd

I have looked at the medal entry for James T Kean (I don't know how to read the medal card)

I cannot find the other entry for James Kean number 3367/2367

What I would like to know is Thomas Kean registered 1892 and James Kean who died one and the same and James maybe his confirmation name?

I have found a baptism at Our Lady of the Immaculate

Thomas Keane son of James and Mary Ann Keane (nee Brown) born 27th August 1892

There is a Thomas Kean on St John's Kirkdale War Memorial.

Could be wrong but I think James is his confirmation name and his James Kean of the Lancashire Fusiliers is Thomas Kean born 1892

I have looked at thebtwo medal index cards on Anc... and saw that Kean, 48591, is shown as James Thomas. He was not entitled to the 1914 or 1915 Star and I can see nothing to link him with 2367 James Keen.
