Hi,
Sometime ago I discovered the my grandfather, William Heaps who had been born in Liverpool in September 1879, was living in the Orford Depot Warrington at the time of the 1901 census.
Can anyone shed any light on what sort of establishment this was?
Cheers
Frank

I'm quoting Joe Griffiths here of the Warrington Branch of the Society, from another post on this board
"The South Lancs Regiment were based at Peninsular Barracks, their records are now held at the Queen's Lancashire Regimental Museum, Fulwood Barracks, Preston. PR28AA Tel. 01772 260362"
"The Assistant Curator of the Queen's Lancashire Regimental Museum is a member of the Society and an ex South Lancs. Officer, he attends our Warrington meetings"
and from Mark Abbott, one of our Military Experts
"Warrington Library certainly is worth a visit. The local papers for both the Boer War and WW1 are excellent."
There might also be an obituary if he died there.
For other posts mentioning Orford Barracks, you can find the search button at the top of this page, enter Orford and choose the Warrington forum to search, it's mentioned quite a number of times.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for the information. I will check it out.
I have discovered that my grandfather died in Pendlebury workhouse hospital Manchester in late November 1918 of influenza. I would assume that he served during the war although his profession was given as motor mechanic.
I do know that his inlaws lived in Manchester and this might explain his presence there. Pre-war research indicated that he was a arket contable in Liverpool so one mustassume that he had left the army at some point and maybe rejoined at the outbreak of the war.
Many thanks,
Frank

5th Volunteer Btn Liverpool Regiment
Interestingly, the 1901 census shows your grandfather as a private in the 5th Irish Volunteers. I would suggest this is the 5th (Irish) Volunteer Battalion Liverpool Regiment. They provided a company of men for service in the Boer War.

Hi Mark,
Many thanks for the information. I also noticed that his occupation was given as railway porter alongside the 5th Irish. The 5th Irish Porters were a regiment who took part in the American Civil War!! Very confusing.
Can you please tell me please where I can find my grandfather's army record ?
Many thanks,
Frank
