Frederick C. Jessop
Frederick C. Jessop
Can anyone give me any tips or suggestions for finding out more about Frederick C. Jessop.
All I know about him so far is that he served with the 6th Volunteer Battalion of the King's Liverpool Regiment from 1885 until at least 1902.
The 6th VB were the forerunners of the 9th Battalion of the King's Liverpool Regiment, Territorial Force. As such, Frederick would have been a part-time soldier, possibly living in the Everton area or thereabouts through all of those years, as that is where the battalion was based.
I have looked on Ancestry for a Census record but none seem to fit. The only Frederick Jessop of the right age is a teacher from Hoylake and whilst it is not impossible that a teacher might travel every week to Everton for weekly drill, the Jessop I am looking for remained a private soldier throughout his military service, so it is unlikely to be the Hoylake man.
I estimate that Frederick C. Jessop was born in the 1860s but it could have been a little earlier.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately, I have no other information about him. I am approaching this from the military angle rather than the genealogical, so apart from the brief details I have of his military service, he is a complete mystery.
I was hoping an obvious candidate would leap off the census pages, but sadly not.
Thanks again,
Ken

Here is a possible from the 1881 census:
Frederick C. Jessop, boarder, student of St Peter's Coll. Peterborough, unmarried, aged 20, address Minster Close, Peterborough, born Hanley, Stafford[shire]. 4O-odd other occupants of similar age, plus a couple of clerics as tutors, plus domestic staff etc.
Could your man have been teaching at say L'pool Collegiate when serving with the Vols?
Ref RG11 1595 88 10.
D
EDIT Any offers from the 1891 census?

I think the transcription has referred to the wrong line, the image is on an angle and was probably easily done, Hanley belongs to the person below him on the list and Frederick C Jessop's birthplace seems to be Stonham Aspal, Suffolk.
In 1871 he is at home with his family
Stonham Aspall, Suffolk
Henry Jessop 46 Plumber & Glazier Suffolk Debenham
Caroline 42 Suffolk Haughley
Devereaux H Jessop 16 Plumber and Glazier " Little Stonham
Frederick son 10 Scholar " "
Louisa daur 3 " "
RG10; Piece: 1743; Folio: 92; Page: 18
Devereaux is in Clapham, London in 1891 a house decorator, with wife Jane and children.
Although Henry, Caroline and Louisa are there in 1881, there is no sign of them in 1891.

This Frederick seems to match up with the one in 1901
57 Alderley? Road, Hoylake
Frederick C Jessop Head M 40 Schoolmaster Suffolk Stonham Astal
Alice M Wife M 36 Liverpool
Frederic D son 10 "
Olive C daur 8 "
Sarah Hart Serv S 36 Domestic Servant "
RG13; Piece: 3387; Folio: 85; Page: 27
Frederic C Jessop married Alice M Hughes in Liverpool St Saviour in 1889, so it would seem that he was definitely in Liverpool for quite a number of years at least around the time of his marriage and while they had the children.

You weren't to know about somebody's bad transcription.daggers wrote:Sorry about the misleading birthplace of Jessop - I relied on the LDS disc version.
It is possible that my g/father married the couple at St Saviours! (RM Ainslie)

How amazing to get connections like that, I wonder if anybody will be able to check the marriage at the Record Office, I hope they take a notice of the minister.
EO, I looked at the 1891 census for Bedford Street, what dreadful writing. I was curious to know whether the family had been immigrants from - well from wherever with a name like that, but I really feel that it's meant to be Hughes just written badly, especially as the birthplaces are all given as Liverpool.

Many thanks to all who have offered suggestions for my enquiry.
It does seem that the teacher is the primary candidate for being 'my' man, but I wonder why an educated man such as him would serve as a private soldier in the Volunteers for over 20 years. Surely he would have been ideal for promotion. It's not even as if he belonged to one of the socially 'elite' volunteer military formations that existed in and around Liverpool at that time.
And, as a professional, married man how would he have fitted dedicated service in the volunteers into his lifestyle for so many years?
Where might I find a newspaper obituary for the death of Frederick Cooper Jessop (registered 1st quarter 1909 Wirral Volume 8a page 337)? That might be the key to showing whether he is 'my' man, as over 20 years service in the volunteers would surely merit a mention.
Thanks again,
Ken

I found the reference dept at Birkenhead main library (still open a few weeks ago!) very helpful when looking for some newspaper obits of WW1 men. Its about a 10 minute walk from their Central Station, up Borough Road, then first floor. [tel: 652 6106] They may be able to tell you on the phone if they have any indexed obits.

Strange that we have come from two different points to arrive at the same man, yet not have found another to fit, so I hope he's the one you are after.
Good luck with the enquiry for the obit.
