An interesting update. Researchers on RootsChat have come up with a likely candidate with a surprising background, John Heim. The candidate had a mother called Dora, a sister called Mary who married a Thompson, lived in the right area and were RCs. The surprising detail is his parents were German!

Our ancestors do like to confuse matters don't they, nothing better than a different name to that you've been searching for all along.

John's baptism at St Joseph's in 1878, his father Jacob was from Bavaria, his mother Dora was from Hanover:-

John married Hannah Maher in 1899 at Our Lady RC in Eldon Street and they had two children, Jacob in 1899 (registered in 1900 as Jacob Henn) and Hannah (Hannah Heim) in 1901.

John is probably at sea at the time of the 1901 Census then Hannah marries again in 1906, then again in 1907. In 1906 she says she is a widow. Can anyone find a death or burial record for her John? Did John leave his family never to return and went on to become better known as John "Barney" Hines?

Anc. mention a John Heim in Berrien Michigan in 1905. Don't know how I got that as I don't have world wide. Don't know if that is any help.

Berrien, Michigan and Benton Harbour, Michigan seem to be very popular for that surname, Blue if you check out the index and see anything you think of interest, let me know, be specific as there are quite a lot of directories, censuses, Draft Registration Cards etc.

Looking at the Michigan records on Family Search none of the John Heims there were born in England. The Heims there will likely be German immigrants or descended from German immigrants. Can anyone find a death/burial for John Heim c1900 to 1906? There shouldn't be one but if you find a possible one let me know.

Letter in today's Liverpool Echo:-

..............................................

Scouse roots

Researchers have recently uncovered the Liverpool roots of legendary Australian WW1 soldier John “Barney” Hines. Hines appeared in an iconic photograph taken by Frank Hurley. Hines was a difficult character, but an aggressive and effective soldier in combat. Little was known about his early life until researchers discovered he was born under a different name. He was formerly John Heim, the son of German immigrants who settled in the Scotland Road area of Liverpool. More information is available on
