Herbert Lyon. 697145/2217 RFA

Post by Kryzta »

Does anyone have any info on this guy, Herbert Lyon. 697145/2217 RFA?

I downloaded all available records and medal cards, for Herbert Lyon, from Ancestry and FMP, then went through them, eliminating them. I ended up with one guy, who I can't find any info on.

Anything at all would be helpfull, parents, wife or kids names, address, dob or even year. I think he is my G Grandad, I have photos of him in uniform and on his horse, I just need something to confirm if I have the right guy.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Do you mind if we work back from what you know, perhaps give your father's name and date of birth so that we can maybe build a picture of him ie when he married, do you have his marriage certificate so that we can pin down his date of birth? where he lived etc.

Have you had the photograph identified for Regiment and whatever else can be identified from it? Please post a copy so that we can see, instructions to do so here https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... 16&t=15790

I have a Herbert Lyon recorded as being an absent voter in 1919

Polling district: 84
Everton
51, Premier Street,
Lyon
Herbert
(a)
NM (Naval or Military)
St. Domingo Ward.

I would say that 697145 is a number that was issued to soldiers from Liverpool & South West Lancashire are.

He is not in any of my wounded or POW lists. I do have a couple whose number is close to Herbert's who where wounded and they are:

Royal Field Artillery
Gunner John Evans
697133
Liverpool
Wounded.

Royal Field Artillery
Driver Henry J Craven
697151
Liverpool
Wounded.

Hi Kathy, thanks.

Herbert was the last twin of George and Sarah Lyon, born 3 Jan 1886, Golborne.
He married Minnie Jane Trezise, Jun-Aug 1908, Leigh.
I don't have a copy of it yet. They didn't tell anyone they were getting married, they just met up after work and got married. I think it was at Leigh town hall.
They lived at 16 Mill St, Golborne, with Minnies parents. (My nan and dad were born in the same house)
They had 2 children, David Henry born 29 June 1909, and Alice Lyon born 11 Feb 1911.
Herbert died June 1959, buried St Thomas, Golborne.

These are the 2 photos I have of Herbert in uniform

The second photo of Herbert on a horse shows his cap badge, which is clearly Royal Artillery.

The numbers you have quoted lead to a medal index card, seen on Ancestry, which shows he earned the Victory and British War Medals. One of them had to be returned for amendment, perhaps because of an error in the details impressed into them. His rank was Driver. I cannot see any surviving service record, as 2 out of 3 were lost when a WW2 bomb destroyed a warehouse in London.

He must have joined as a Territorial, and was given the number 2217, which would only apply within that unit. All the Territorials were given new numbers in 1917, his was 697145. That is from a block of numbers allocated to the Divisional Ammunition Columns of the 55th and 57th (West Lancashire) Divisions. These DACs were responsible for delivering ammunition to the gun areas of the Field Artillery units of those divisions, by horse-drawn limbers or waggons, probably with two or more horses.

I hope this helps.

Thanks daggers.

My dad and his sister knew him (my dad was named after him). My dad would never talk about his family, I always got a very firm "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW THAT FOR?!", in a tone that said shut up.
I've annoyed my aunty, she said he would never talk about the war, like so many.
My gran never got any medals, so uncle David might have got them.
Might be worth me sending a letter to his daughter again, she said she had a lot of photos of men in army uniform, but had no idea who they were, and was going to get her daughter or grandaughter to scan and email them to me. (She doesn't have internet)
