George H Giffiths KIA 14th Aug 1916

Post by Katie »

I have a roll of honour notice from the Liverpool Echo 14th Aug 1917

GRIFFITHS- In loving remembrance of George H Griffiths, killed in action August 14th 1916, the beloved son of the late Thomas E Griffiths, of Walton (many years in the Cunard Company), nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths, of Bootle; grandson of Mrs. Binns, of Neston Street.

The only George Griffiths I can locate with a father called Thomas is

1891 Census-6 Dane Street, Walton

Thomas Griffiths-Head-Mar-34?-Dock Labourer-Born, Liverpool
Maria Griffiths-Wife-Mar-25-Born Bootle
Lillian Griffiths-Dau-4-born Walton
George Griffiths-Son-2-born Walton.

There was a marriage in 1886 for a Thomas Edward Griffiths, son of George Griffiths getting married to a Maria Holmes. And I also located a birth for a George Henry Griffiths registered 1889. I do not have a George H Griffiths in my database nor can I find an entry on CWGC or Soldiers Wages and Effects.

I can't find the Griffiths family on any other Census. Can anyone help me find George H Griffiths.

I don't know if it will discount the marriage of Thomas Griffiths & Maria Holmes, but the baptism of the son is in the RC registers at St Francis de Sales, name being George Dalton Griffiths, born 23 June 1896 bap. 24 December 1889. Address 35 Makin Street. Sub Conditione.

An update on this post:-

MaryA found a baptism for a George Dalton Griffiths son of Thomas and Maria Griffiths born 1889. I think I have located the Uncle of George Henry Griffiths reported Killed in 1916.

George Henry Griffiths born 1862 married Catherine Dalton in 1889. Their son George Dalton Griffiths was born 1890 and died 1891

Births Sep 1890
Griffiths
George Dalton
W. Derby 8b 438

Deaths Jun 1891
GRIFFITHS George Dalton 1
W. Derby 8b 462

George Griffiths had a brother called Thomas Edward Griffiths which ties in with what is recorded in the Roll of Honour notice.

I will plod on with this one.

I might be wide of the mark and it might be full of coincidences,

George Griffiths married Elizabeth Cannell, 1856, Liverpool, their son, Thomas Edward Griffiths, bn, 1856, Seacombe, Cheshire, baptised Liverpool.

Thomas married Maria Holmes, 1886 Liverpool, had a son, registered, George Henry Griffiths, Liverpool, 1889, GRO, mothers maiden name Holmes. 8b 438.

There's a Thomas Griffiths, bn 1857, Liverpool Crew Lists, a few ships I checked he was on were Cunard Registered.

I think Thomas died in 1891 aged 34, birth date 1857, there doesn't appear to any sign of him after that date.

A possible connection, the late baptism Mary found, 1896, George Dalton Griffiths,

A possible marriage in 1896, Liverpool, John Dalton, Maria Griffiths?

Thanks Bertie. I had got as far as her remarriage to John Dalton. And I also believe that John Dalton's sister married the brother of Thomas Edward Griffiths and they are the Uncle and Aunt from Bootle. I like coincidences.

Thanks for your help in solving this one.

Just to confirm Bertie I have just come across his Obituary notice in The Liverpool Echo 19th October 1916:-

DALTON-August 14, Killed in action aged 27 years, Second-Lieutenant George Henry Dalton, the dearly beloved grandson of Mrs. Burns, 23, Neston Street, Walton.

Sleep on dear grandson in a foreign grave.
Your life for your Country you nobly gave.
No loved one beside you to say good-bye.
But safe in God's keeping now you lie.

Residing at 23, Neston Street in 1911 is:-

Elizabeth Burns, aged 70-Married in the Children born column she states she has no children born Lancs, Liverpool. Strange.
